Can You Hear Me Now? Good. Print E-mail
Written by Nick G. - Posted on Thursday, 15 December 2011 23:00

In this post I'm just going to talk about something that almost seems to be taken for granted in this day and age.  I am of course talking about cell-phones.  Yes, it seems as though everyone with a pulse now has a phone of their own and a plan to match, but I think it's important to remember that not cell-phones weren't always as accessible and user-friendly as they are today.

Those of you who were born in the 90's and earlier will remember the days when every phone in your house had that annoying, coiled-cord that seemed to want to strangle you.  Or for those of you vintage phone users, how about the dial-phones?  To this day, I don't think I've ever made a single phone call on a dial-phone.

Then came the early models of cell-phones.  Normally, these types of phones were only purchased by upper-class businessmen or important people; and they weren't nearly as convenient or compact as phones often are today.  In fact, it's a common saying that using this old model of cell-phone was similar to talking on a walkie-talkie in a war-zone, and probably got about as good reception:

Compare that to the typical, modern day hand-held cellular device:

Kind of a difference, wouldn't you say?

Now of course, most people would argue that all these advancements in phone technology are great and make our lives better; well, they are probably right, but my main point is to emphasize that all these advancements are far from old; only about ten to twenty years, in fact.  So I guess this isn't really a comparison or demonization of technology, far from it, really I just feel that it's best to stop sometimes and think about how it was not so long and ago and always be appreciative of what we have, even if we sometimes want to throw our phones through a glass window when we get a dropped call ;)

So, if anything, this post is just a small, quaint way of saying be glad for what you have and during this holiday season never forget the probably-best form of communication, face to face :)

Happy Holidays!
