Wing’s Blog – Reviews & Live Streaming

Its been a while since my last blog entry, I’ve been bogged down with lots of stuff and couldn’t get around to writing. There’s still piles of boxes of review units for me to go through but I just don’t have the time to photograph them, test them out thoroughly or even research them to do them any justice. I have had to pick out the reviews that have interested me the most so that I have some incentive to get them finished.

Having said that, I thoroughly enjoyed reviewing the ASUS ROG Claymore Core RGB gaming keyboard. Let’s make something clear here, FunkyKit is under no obligation to suck up to one manufacturer or another, so we don’t skew our reviews to say the product is great when they are not. This keyboard is right up there with the best I’ve used, it really is that good. And this is without being able to test out a whole range of features that’s linked with the Armoury software, as the supported version isn’t even released yet. Once the review went live, we soon realized that the Claymore Core hasn’t been officially been released by ROG yet, hence lack of software support…….I guess that sums up the Hong Kong market for you……I guess we can call this a world’s first!

Another review I did was my MSI GTX 1060 Gaming X 6Gb graphics card. Its one of those great buys that doesn’t cost the earth and yet you can get great performances out of it. My main gripe is because this card runs so cool, I can’t find a decent enough excuse to water cool it, the pump might generate more heat than the card! I need to find a reason to install fat tubes of coolant in my PC case….

We covered the HKEF 2016 Autumn Edition last week, and the main attraction at the exhibition turned out not to be any of the VR stuff, robotics or smartphone accessories, but my DJI Osmo Mobile gimbal which I was using to record the event. I had so many people coming up to me to ask me what it is, how it works, and if they can buy one (the DJI store in HK must have seen a surge in sales as I gave out instructions on how to get to their store on multiple occasions). It really is a great investment, its so good we’ve got Winston giving it some serious thought one getting one! Another reason we drew crowds of people around us was that we had decided to live stream the event via Periscope and Facebook Live, they wanted to see just how effective a marketing tool live streaming could be. It wasn’t long before we had middle-aged Chinese women pushing Loy and I aside so they could take a photograph of Winston doing his live streams…….

There’s a reason to all this live streaming we’ve been practicing.

Earlier this year we covered the Computex 2016 event with a 5 man crew which involved lots of photographs and filming, and then tons of editing which took days of work before the videos went live. For next year we want to go ‘light’ and have the content go live as soon as possible, which cuts down on tons of work needed. We are still exploring all the tools and methods we can utilize, so if you see some random video of Winston picking his nose on Facebook Live, its probably because we’re trying out some random WordPress social media plugin.
