Introduction

Solid State Drives or SSDs (as they're known for short), is fast becoming the hard drive of choice for high-end users and enthusiasts. Compared to standard 2.5" hard drives, SSDs not only offer a much higher performance boost in terms of both read and write speeds, but they're also shock-resistant and compatible for notebooks, as well as desktop PCs.

We've tested several SSDs already, and most of the samples we received came in capacities of 120Gb, which I think is a good size. However, it will cost you and you'll be looking to pay around USD $250+ for those. There are lower capacity sizes of around 60Gb or 64Gb, which would cost less, but I think the size is a little limiting ... and you can forget about the 32Gb SSDs, they're a waste of time and not even worth looking at. So here is a quick breakdown ... 120Gb SSD = High cost, decent capacity. 60Gb = Affordable, limited capacity. My advice, if you can afford a 120Gb SSD ... go for it. For those on a tight budget ... you really have no choice but to get a 60Gb SSD.

In this review, we'll be taking a look at the OCZ Vertex 2 60Gb SSD 2.5" version. It's based on MLC Flash technology and uses the Sandforce controller as found on all of OCZ's Vertex 2 series. It offers several features including Native TRIM support (for fast booting), RAID support and Max IOPS Firmware. According to OCZ, the Vertex 2 series provides a faster, more responsive PC experience, and also promotes cooler, quieter, and more energy efficient conditions compared to traditional mechanical hard drives.

OCZ Technology has now become a mjor player for producing high performance memory, excellent PSUs, good thermal products, and course the world's fastest SSDs. For those who are not familiar with OCZ Technology or their products, here's something taken from their website.

"Founded in 2002, San Jose, California-based OCZ Technology Group, Inc. has built on its expertise in high-speed memory to become a dominant player in the manufacturing and distribution of solid state drives (SSDs), a disruptive, game-changing technology that is replacing traditional rotating magnetic hard disk drives (HDDs). SSDs are faster, more reliable, run cooler, and use significantly less power than the HDDs used in the majority of computers today. In addition to SSD technology, OCZ also offers high performance components for computing devices and systems, including enterprise class power management products as well leading edge computer gaming solutions."

I was told by some tech gurus that there is a sweet spot (for SSD capacities) in terms of obtaining the best performance. Apparently, it's all to do with the capacity of the SSDs. Now, as far as I'm aware (correct me if I'm wrong via comments below) ... lower capacities of 30Gb - 80Gb produces a lower set of results than mid-range capacities of 120Gb - 256Gb. Is this really TRUE? Some people might find this odd ... I certainly thought so too. Well, I was quite surprised when I eventually saw the results myself. Read on ...

Whatever the stories, I'm expecting the OCZ Vertex 2 60Gb SSD to produce some good scores in our tests. It will be interesting to see how well it performs against other similar SSDs in its class, which includes the ADATA S596 Turbo and Patriot TorqX. Last month, we've tested OCZ's larger 3.5" version of the Vertex 2 - 120Gb. It performed pretty well, producing some very good scores during our benchmarks. Let's see if the 60Gb version is any good.

We'll be testing the OCZ Vertex 2 60Gb SSD on our test rig which consist of an Intel Core i5 - 650 @ 3.2Ghz cooled by a Noctua NH-D14 CPU cooler, a Gigabyte P55 USB3 motherboard, a Geforce GTX 460 OC, 4Gb Crucial Ballistix Tracer and a Silverpower 650w power supply.

OK, let's not waste any more time and take a look at the specifications in OCZ Vertex 2 60Gb 2.5" SSD ...
