Verdict and Conclusion

Introduction

Nowadays, USB flash drives have become an essential tool for many people for storing and transfering files. Over the past several years, I've had the pleasure of revieweing many USB flash drives from the likes of Adata, Kingston, Super Talent, PQI and Crucial. Most of them are similar in terms of performance and features. But they do come in all shapes and sizes. Some are no smaller than the size of your thumbnail, while others are rugged, shock resistant and waterproof.

So, when Adata asked us to checkout their "Military-Specification" High Speed 16Gb USB2.0 flash drive. According to Adata, this USB flash drive is meant to be waterproof and shock resistant. So when the drive arrived at our labs, we were more than happy to give it a blast!!

In this review, we'll be taking a look at the Adata S007 Superior Series 16GB USB2.0 Rugged Flash Drive. It's a flash drive that's designed for the people with active lifestyles. The unit has the resilience and endurance to stand up to rough terrain. This is all thanks to a layer of military-grade protective rubber insulation, which provides waterproof and shock-resistant features.

Adata are renouned for producing memory related products, from notebook SODIMMs to high performance memory for overclocking. For those who are not too familiar with Adata, here's a little blurb taken from their website.

"Founded in May, 2001 by Chairman and CEO Mr. Simon Chen, ADATA Technology Co., Ltd. is committed to providing the ultimate memory solutions that enrich customers’ digital life with strong belief in integrity and professionalism.  With DRAM modules as its initial product focus, ADATA soon recognized the market’s trend and diversified its product portfolio to include Flash application and data storage solutions.  Backed by its technical expertise, state-of-the art manufacturing facilities, and premium customer services, ADATA offers complete memory solutions including DRAM Module, USB Flash Drive, Memory Card, Solid State Drive and Portable Hard Drive; and has quickly risen to become the world’s leading provider of memory modules and Flash application products with a 2nd largest share in DRAM modules and 3rd in Flash Application products (iSupply, May 2010). "

According to the specifications, the Adata S007 USB flash drive offers a max read speed of 30Mb/sec and a max write speed of 8Mb/sec. Not the fastest we've seen when you compare it with their N005 USB3.0 flash drive, but it's certainly fast enough as a USB2.0 flasg drive.

To test these claims, there's only one thing to do. Check out our video clip above ... it shows how we smashed the flash drive with a hammer to see much shock it can really withstand. Then later, we dunked the unit into a bowl of water and then immediately used it on our notebook ... It's ALL fun, and part of our tests ;)
