Review: HEC Cougar SX 550w Power Supply
The Box, The Features, The PSU
Testing Proceedures and Results
Dissection, Component Specs
Verdict and Conclusion

Introduction

Hi folks, here comes the review I promised you on HEC's Cougar SX 550w 80+ Silver power supply!

The first thing of note on this power supply is that HEC, the company that designed it, actually manufactures it too!  This might seem like a no-brainer, but in reality the vast majority of power supply companies don't actually manufacture their own units, and in many cases don't design them either.  That goes for power supplies ranging from $10 units I'd be afraid to plug a 486 into all the way up to 1500w monsters.

Here's a little blurb about HEC taken from their website ...

"Founded in 1979, HEC Group is today a leading global manufacturer and designer of PC Case, Power Supplies, Rackmount Chassis & Adapters, serving customers around the world.

In addition to our headquarters in Taiwan, HEC Group has a manufacturing facility in China and an established network of branch offices in USA, Germany, UK, Japan, China and Spain. This combination enables us to provide our customers with competitive manufacturing costs and the most efficient and immediate service worldwide.

Our world class engineering and design expertise, helps us deliver a total solution to first-tier system integrators. Today, our R&D team continues to evolve and refine our technologies, constantly improving performance levels, and simultaneously reducing manufacturing costs."

HEC however is a power supply manufacturer, they design and manufacture PSUs on a regular basis for other companies, and have decided to make some high end units for themselves as well.  These high end units are the Cougar series, of which the 550w is the lowest wattage unit in the series.  Despite being on the low end of the series it carries the 80+ Silver badge, guaranteeing excellent efficiency.

Getting right down to it, lets look at the box and what it has to say ...
