Introduction A while ago HEC very kindly sent me a stack of power supplies to review, we've already seen the excellent little Rasurbo 350w unit, and the much juicier Cougar SX 550w unit. Today we're looking at their Cougar CMX 700w unit. The CMX series is an older design than the SX, it uses the standard group regulated design for 12v/5v/3.3v rather than the SX's all-12v then DC-DC regulation setup. What does that mean? Slightly lower efficiency, and it can't quite put out it's entire 700w rating on the 12v line. It manages 650w on the 12v though, so it's not far from it! HEC power supplies are designed and built by HEC themselves, a rather refreshing change from the standard operation of designed by company X, manufactured by company X or maybe Y, and then sold by company Z. I like it.
HEC has this to say about themselves on their website:
