Author Topic: SSD problem?  (Read 929 times)

I was going to buy a SSD for my new big rig, but was put off by a problem with them. It seems that some, if not all suffer from clogging due to partially filled cells not being cleared. Allegedly this builds up and severely slows down the device. I've read reviews on most of them and can't find any useful reference to it any more. Has this been cured ? Or do they still need a complete format and re install every so often ?

I'm quite happy with the Velociraptor and it was comparatively cheap. The thought of a solid state drive is quite enticing, but maybe the things are still a little new. When they are cheaper and if the clogging problem is cured, (unless it already has) perhaps it's a good bet we will all be using them. Mmmm A 2TB SSD, yummy.  Grin

Crucial seem to be getting SSDs right, their new 250Gb C300 seems to have cracked the blocked cell problem by using TRIM and updated software. At around £500 this is one hell of a drive! although you will need a 6Gb controller to get the super high potential read/right speeds.

Max read:  355MB/sec
Max write: 215MB/sec

It uses a Marvell controller instead of the usual Sandforce device. It's all very clever and fairly complex.
It would be nice to have a review of it here, but I suppose it's being able to blag one from somewhere.

I agree they are far to expensive yet to consider buying at the moment. Hopefully prices will come down a lot.

YES they are expensive, but OMG they are soooo quick. I have a 32GB in my Asus U2E and it loads up in just seconds!! Many laptops are coming supplied with them as standard and I would whole heartedly recommend one to anyone!
