I'll post this here but, this question contains other bits as well.

I've been tempted to upgrade one of my rigs and have come up with the following:

An ASUS P8P67 b3 MOBO

An Intel i5 2500K CPU

Memory would be Corsair Vengeance Performance Memory Module 8gb (2x4gb) Ddr3 1866mhz Cl9 (made for second generation Intel i series CPU's)

There are plenty of really good HSF's around, no problem there.

I already have a new GFX DX11 card and a Corsair HX 850W PSU. Also an 850W be quiet Dark Power Pro. Either would do I guess as both have the correct plugs for this board.

Is the standard  P8P67 mobo good enough as it seems fundamentally the same as the deluxe/pro without all the extra PCIe GFX sockets and/or a front eSATA socket box. (Which I don't need.)

Any comments/recommendations are very welcome.

You'll be very happy with that setup, I don't see anything I would change, really.

The entire P8P67 series is essentially the same except for the features, overclocking and performance are all pretty much identical.

Thanks Bobnova, after reading the specs of the boards they did seem all the same at the basic level, but I wasn't sure. Upgrade fever has hold of me, can I fight it ?  Undecided

Doubt it Tongue

SandyBridge is nice, runs fast, runs cool!
I liked the 980x better, but comparing a $1k cpu to a $300 cpu isn't exactly fair.

As much as I would like to Bobnova, I can't quite run to a 980x. With all the other odds and ends this lot will cost me about £550ish, enough for the moment I think.  Wink  If I win the lottery, well you never know.  Grin

Sounds like a nice set up Vox, you better buy it before something new pops up that you may fancy better. nudge nudge.

Things should be pretty stable till BullDozer launches, with the possible exception of SSD prices due to japan.
It's possible that CPU and memory prices will go up too, but I'd be fairly surprised as Intel and AMD would have to coordinate with each other, which is A) unlikely and B) illegal.

You'll really enjoy sandybridge.  My only real gripe is that a failed overclock can take over a minute of reboot looping for the motherboard to figure out what the hell is going on.

I got my 2600k up to 5408mhz last night.  That thing was hauling!

I'm only looking for a 4.5 Gig overclock Bobnova, that should be enough for what I want. At least your mobo did sort its self out rather than having to pull a cmos jumper off, now that is a pain! Well done for getting those speeds out of your 2600K, that's amazing.  Smiley  I will be ordering the stuff this week when I get my refund for a useless PVR I returned.

I'm undecided which cooler to buy now, I was going for the Titan Fenrir 2, but it wont fit these mobos due to the heatsinks getting in the way. The alternative I was looking at is the Gelid Tranquillo. This isn't far off the Fenrir for cooling and is extremely quiet. Any other suggestions would be welcome. but preferably not water based as that would be pushing the price a bit too much at the moment as I also want a rather expensive sound card as well.
Thanks for the advice Bobnova, it's all very useful.  Smiley

I always go with the cooler larger than the case type, when I built the dragon case I had to set it in the case to see if I measured right for the inside width Roll Eyes

I have a huge Coolermaster case, so that's not the problem. It's finding one that fits the mobo and doesn't fowl the extra high heatsinks on the memory I think the Fenrir will fit with a little mod to the fixing bracket.

I had that happen, had to notch the heatsink on the memory bank to get one on, that was before I learned to read height measurements.  Roll Eyes
