How to make a Mac OS X Yosemite Installer USB Drive

Here’s a step by step guide on how to make a Mac OS X Yosemite Installer USB Drive. If you’ve already downloaded the OS X Yosemite installer application, you will find it in the /Applications/ folder on your Mac … then you can skip steps 1 and 2 and directly go to step 3:

  1. Download OS X Yosemite from the Mac App Store, it’s free – Remember DO NOT INSTALL IT YET!
  2. When the download completes and the “Install OS X Yosemite” app launches, quit out of it immediately
  3. Launch Terminal app and enter the following command exactly, copy and paste works fine:
    sudo /Applications/Install\ OS\ X\ Yosemite.app/Contents/Resources/createinstallmedia –volume /Volumes/Untitled –applicationpath /Applications/Install\ OS\ X\ Yosemite.app –nointeraction

  4. Enter the administrator password when requested, then hit the RETURN key to start making the installer.
  5. You’ll see a series of messages (see below), let it finish and wait until you see the “Done” message. It may take some time as the full installer is more than 3Gb in size:
    “Erasing Disk: 0%… 10%… 20%… 30%…100%…
    Copying installer files to disk…
    Copy complete.
    Making disk bootable…
    Copying boot files…
    Copy complete.
    Done.”
  6. When it’s finished and the terminal console reads “Done”, you can exit out of Terminal and that’s it! Now You’re ready to use the bootable installer drive 🙂
