Introduction I remember a few months ago, I was told by a few hardware manufacturers that their company wanted to enter into this so-called "Eco-Friendly" and "Green-Tech" market. It's a very niche but interesting market. Imagine making a name for yourself as being one of only a few companies that truely cares about the environment, and for producing eco-friendly goods. Well, times have changed and "green" products are now more prominent in today's market place. Solar powered LED torches are nothing new, but makes this particular torch interesting, is the fact that it can last upto 5 hours from a single daytime/daylight charge. Now, is this something that HIS really wants to get involved in? Well, it's definitely not what I would expect from a manufacturer that specialise in PC graphic cards. However, HIS has oddly decided to produce a LED flash torch that's powered by solar energy. Yes, no batteries needed ... it's very green you might say, but how does it perform? and does it really last upto 5 hours from a single daytime/daylight charge.
The packaging is pretty average and has no instruction manual ... but the again, I don't think anyone would really need instructions for using a torch. LOL! The contents include a spare strap, the torch itself and a box, that resembles a case for storing your spectacles. HIS call it ... a multi-function magic case. The torch comes with 5 super bright LEDs, which HIS claims to be brighter than any standard torch. On the other end is the usual on/off switch. The length of the torch is approximately 12cm, with one side featuring glass panel showing the solar panels. It really reminds me of my old solar powered calculators back in school.
Here's a product specification regarding the solar-panels used for this LED torch.
Now, the question is ... how well does the torch work? Does it really last upto 5 hours? Well, after leaving it out in the daylight to charge for 6 hours ... I switched in on and left it to run. Let's really see how long it lasts.
Verdict and Conclusion Well, despite all the claims ... I can say that the torch doesn't last upto 5 hours from a single daytime/daylight charging time of 6 hours (as stated). We only manage 4 hours and 38 minutes, which is pretty close and not bad to be honest. Build quality is OK ... it's what you would expect being made in China. Would I buy one? ... No. Would I accept one as a gift ... Yes. I think HIS should concentrate on what matters most to them ... producing high quality PC graphic cards. Leave the "Green-Tech" to someone else.
