Oculus May Release $200 Standalone Headset In 2018

A virtual reality headset that’s not dependent on a connected smartphone or PC could be released by Facebook’s Oculus next year. Bloomberg reports the company is working on a new headset that’ll be significantly cheaper than the Rift, which has a higher price tag on its own and necessitates an expensive computer. It’ll reportedly cost $200.

Oculus didn’t confirm or deny its plans.

We don’t have a product to unveil at this time. However we can confirm that we’re making several significant technology investments in the standalone VR category. This is in addition to our commitment to high-end VR products like Oculus Rift and mobile phone products like Gear VR.– Oculus

Sources speaking with Bloomberg claim Facebook intends to reveal the product in 2018. The new headset is meant for “immersive gaming, watching video and social networking.” It has the codename “Pacific.”
