Nintendo Switch Sells 2.4 Million Worldwide

After Nintendo announced yesterday that the Nintendo Switch was its fastest selling console ever, with 906,000 units sold during its first month on-sale in the United States, independent research group SuperData has put out a report sharing its expectations for worldwide sales.

According to SuperData’s research, Nintendo’s new console sold 2.4 million units worldwide in its first month. Nintendo itself had stated last October that it was expecting to ship 2 million units to retailers worldwide for March, so SuperData’s predictions presume that they were able to deliver more than initially thought.

With that in mind, the report forecasts that total Switch sales in 2017 may reach as many as 7.2 million units sold. This would put it at almost exactly half the size of the PlayStation 4 at the same point in its life (it sold 14.4 million units worldwide in its first year) and 3 million behind Xbox One. It also, unsurprisingly, puts it ahead of Wii U growth during its first year. Nintendo’s previous console sold only 5.8 million units in its first year on sale, and has only sold 13.5 million overall. If the Switch really is on track to manage 7.2 million in 2017, it’ll be halfway to matching its predecessor in just one year.
