Up to 3.8 Petabytes of Network Storage with Thecus N16000PRO and Daisy-Chaining Technology

Thecus Volume Expansion Technology Means Massive Storage Potential at Lower Costs

Petabytes, need I say more? Read more after the break if you want to learn how with the help of Thecus.

May 20 2014, Milpitas, California – Networked storage expert, Thecus, announces the capability for up to 3.8 petabytes of networked storage with its N16000PRO series NAS. Through Thecus Daisy-Chaining technology and the newly announced 6TB enterprise class hard drives from Seagate and HGST, an incredible amount of storage, the equivalent of 900,000 DVDs, can be connected into one networked storage solution.

Massive Expansion

The 16 bay N16000PRO NAS features Thecus Daisy-Chaining technology that allows one N16000PRO to be directly connected with up to four D16000 DAS (Direct-Attached Storage) units. Featuring 16 drive bays each, the combined capacity of the entire daisy chain is 80 hard drives. Through Thecus’s Volume Expansion feature, the N16000PRO can then be networked with up to 7 other N16000PRO master units using a 10GbE switch. This creates a storage cluster with capacity of up to 640 hard drives, or 3.8PB using the latest 6TB enterprise hard drives from Seagate and HGST.

Cost Savings

Daisy-Chaining means massive volume at a fraction of the cost of normal rackmount storage. Directly attached storage eliminates CPU and RAM overhead, creating cost savings not only in the unit themselves, but also through lower power usage and data center cooling costs. A server rack with multiple daisy-chained Thecus D16000 DAS units will consume significantly less power than NAS units with the same capacity.

Enterprise Performance and Reliability

Affordable expansion doesn’t mean sacrificing enterprise-class performance or reliability. Thecus D16000 DAS units use 6G SAS cables for high data speeds throughout the daisy chain. Reliability is further ensured with built-in redundant power supplies. Thecus N16000PRO NAS feature quad-core Intel® Xeon® Processors with 8GB of DDR3 RAM. Rock-solid data security is also available thanks to the N16000PRO’s RAID volume protection, High Availability, and AES-NI encryption features.
