Battle of the Titans ... who will with this epic battle. Find out more over at HardOCP. Radeon HD 7990 versus GeForce GTX TITAN.

7990-vs-gtx690

"Today, we are going to take one GeForce GTX TITAN and add its performance into our already evaluated comparisons from the HD 7990 launch review and see how AMD Radeon HD 7990 compares to one GeForce GTX TITAN running three displays at 5760x1200. Remember, Radeon HD 7990 is running two 7970 GPUs in CrossFire, and our GeForce GTX TITAN is just one single-GPU, but both video cards will set you back exactly $999."

Demand for SSDs in PCs to boom Print E-mail
Posted by Will Smith
Wednesday, 08 May 2013 03:47

SSD will dominate the storage market throughout 2013 and right through to 2017 ... that's according.

"Global shipments of solid state drives (SSD) in PCs are set to rise by a factor of seven by 2017, allowing them to claim more than one-third of the market for PC storage solutions by that time, IHS iSuppli said in its new report.

v3 20-240GB-guts-top

SSD shipments in PCs will rise to 227 million units in 2017, up more than 600% from 31 million in 2012, IHS predicted. Meanwhile, shipments of PC hard disk drives (HDD) will decline to 410 million in 2017, down 14% from 475 million in 2012."

Intel launches Silvermont microarchitecture Print E-mail

Tuesday, 07 May 2013 05:50

Intel ramps up their attack on the market by introducing their low-power chips. Ideal for smartphones and even data centers.

"Intel has announced its new microarchitecture named Silvermont, aimed at low-power requirements in market segments from smartphones to the data center. The Silvermont will be the foundation for a range of products beginning to come to market later this year (2013), and will also be manufactured using the company's 22nm Tri-Gate SoC manufacturing process.

The Silvermont microarchitecture also features a new out-of-order execution engine; a new multi-core and system fabric architecture; new IA instructions and technologies and enhanced power management capabilities including a new intelligent burst technology, low- power C states and a wider dynamic range of operation taking advantage of Intel's 3D transistors."

Nintendo looks to Apps market to increase Wii-U sales Print E-mail

The Apps market is a billion dollar market ... I can why Nintendo wants to get in there.

"Nintendo is trying to modify its game consoles so customers can use smartphone applications on them, as the struggling Japanese company aims to return to profitability.

The Japan Times reported Monday that anonymous company sources revealed the console maker is betting on third-party smartphone apps to spur device sales. This, in turn, will lead to a growth in popular game titles on its platform, it added. Nintendo will also focus on developing new software internally, the sources said.

Nintendo had posted a net profit of 7.1 billion yen (US$71 million) for its fiscal year ended March 31, 2013, which was below its forecast of 14 billion yen (US$142 million). It also reported a full-year operating loss of 36.4 billion yen (US$366.4 million) following worse-than-expected sales of its latest game console Wii U. This is Nintendo's second consecutive annual operating loss."

AMD's Radeon HD 7990 was released only a few weeks ago ... and manufacturers are cashing on it. Costing USD $999 ... you do get 6Gb of GDDR5 ram and a powerful GPU.

"Gigabyte Technology has introduced its latest Radeon HD 7990-based graphics card, GV-R799D5-6GD-B featuring the Graphics Core Next (GCN) architecture for gaming performance and power efficiency. The graphics card is also equipped with the latest technologies including PCI Express 3.0 and AMD ZeroCore Power.

With AMD's Eyefinity technology, users are able to separate their image or video contents onto five different displays and are also able to enhance their multi-display experience further with AMD HD3D technology and universal bezel compensation.

The graphics card also features 6GB GDDR5 memory and 768-bits memory bus bandwidth, helping to accelerate the communication between graphics card and the hardware platform."

Enermax Platimax 600w 80+ Platinum Power Supply Print E-mail

We've just published a review on the Enermax Platimax 600w 80+ Platinum PSU. The features list is similar to its bigger brother, the 1350W version ...  but the PSU itself is smaller and of course much lower wattage. In theory it should be significantly more efficient than the Big One at single GPU type wattages. Personally I'm hoping it'll be that, as well as be very very quiet and generally awesome. We'll see how it turns out.

"All told this is an excellent unit with fairly small shortcomings, the combination of cost cutting on the EMI filter and a high price offends me and forces me to hack some off the final rating, but don't let it discourage you from choosing this PSU if it looks like what you want. The performance is nothing short of excellent."

AMD Radeon HD 7990 review Print E-mail

It's currently the MOST powerful graphics card right now! ... and it will cost you USD $999 if you want one, not to mention a very hefty electric bill too ;)

"As we expected, the 7990 is an absolute beast when it comes to power consumption. HotHardware slotted it as the highest of the cards it tested, noting that under load, its power consumption was over 100 watts higher than the GTX 690. As for noise level, the 7990's open-air three-fan system turned out to be much quieter than the GTX 690, and it's certainly cooler than two 7970s put together -- Tech Spot discovered that the 7990's temperature never exceeded 72 degrees.

amd-radeon-hd-7990

However, it's still not exactly silent. Tom's Hardware found that the 7990's power-related vibrations actually created more sound than the whirring fans themselves. Still, others like Hot Hardware say that noise is a "non-issue" with the HD 7990 despite its high power consumption. Overclocking didn't seem to improve its performance that much, with Bit-tech stating that even then, the 7990 couldn't beat the pair of 7970s in Crossfire -- its Unigine score improved just six points to 2177, far from the latter's score of 2442."
