GEIL EVO X DDR4-3000 16GB Dual Channel Memory Kit Review

Thanks to GEIL, we’ll be taking a look at the their EVO X DDR4-3000 16GB Dual Channel Memory Kit. These modules are the latest addition to the GEIL’s extensive range of high performance memory for enthusiasts and gamers.

The EVO X features Geil’s HILM (Hybrid-Independent-Light-Module) Technology. So what is this HILM Technology? Well according to Geil, the HILM offers LED illumination, which is completely separate from the memory module itself. It combines LEDs, microprocessor, circuits, switch and dual power source in one modular solution and allows performance and innovative lighting without compromise.

The RGB LED illumination is achieved by a 12v power cable (4-pin), on the selected motherboards which has the RGB headers. These are normally found on motherboards that support the Asus Aura Sync and the MSI Mystic Light Sync.

If your motherboard does not have the 4-pin RGB headers, then no worries, you can still power the LEDs on the memory modules using the 9v/12v fan power from the motherboard. This will give you four different RGB LED breathing illumination modes – Red, Green and Blue.

Here’s a little blurb taken from GEIL’s website.

GeIL – Golden Emperor International Ltd. – one of the worlds’ leading PC components & peripheral manufacturers that concentrate in making the most innovative products, from memory modules, power supply units to gaming peripherals, for PC enthusiasts worldwide.

Established in 1993, GeIL has soon become one of the most trusted memory professionals in the industry. In the year 2000, with the vast knowledge of tweaking and producing some of the world’s fastest DRAM modules, GeIL shook the PC enthusiasts market and changed it for the better. The introduction of the first ever memory heat-spreader, the dual-channel packaged memory kit and lifetime warranty are all innovative concepts GeIL introduced in the PC DIY market from 2000~2003. Since then, GeIL has been concentrating in perfecting the technologies of IC testing, memory burn-in and quality assurance for memory products in application in all segments of the market. As of today, GeIL memory is trusted and distributed in over 50 countries worldwide with volume upwards of five million pieces annually. GeIL – Always Ahead.

As GeIL’s memory products thrived in the high-end PC market, the creative minds at GeIL came up with yet another brilliant design of an interactive power supply unit control panel and high efficiency PSU. Together, the patented duo made perfect for supplying superior power and securing the health of gaming performance PC. The achievement in such PSU R&D deserved a brand of its’ own when Thortech Power was born in 2009. Thortech – Nothing but Power.

Two years later, the never-resting minds at GeIL wanted to perfect the PC gaming experience by introducing to the market a dual-sensor gaming mouse concept. The concept came to reality in 2011, with the brand EpicGear, the world’s first HDST-Hybrid Dual Sensor Technology gaming mouse was born – the MeduZa. One mouse, two sensors and three different modes, the MeduZa fulfilled PC gamers with the ultimate mouse solution for its perfect ergonomics and game-type-sensitive sensor preferences. Shortly after the debut of the epic MeduZa, a complete line of ingeniously designed and crafted gaming peripherals were introduced by EpicGear. These ultimate gaming gears soon became gamers’ top choices in dominating in their games. EpicGear – Equip to Dominate.

We’ll be testing these modules on our test rig which is comprised of an ASRock X99X Killer 3.1 motherboard, with an Intel Core i7-6800K processor. There’s also a HIS Radeon RX 480 Roaring 8GB GDDR5 graphics card, a Thermaltake Toughpower 750W PSU, and various other components from our partners.

We will NOT be using the XMP 2.0 profiles in our tests, as we’ve discovered that it actually handicaps/limits the overall memory performance. Instead, we manually selected DDR4-3000 in the BIOS and set everything else to AUTO.

Rated to run at 15-17-17-35 @ 1.35v, the GEIL EVO X should give us some decent performance. It’ll be interesting to see how it will compare with other DDR4 dual channel kits on the market.

OK, now let’s take a closer look at the GEIL EVO X DDR4-3000 16GB Dual Channel Memory Kit … starting with their specifications on our next page.
