Asus ROG Rampage VI Extreme (X299) Motherboard Review

Thanks to Asus, we’ll be taking a look at their ROG Rampage VI Extreme (X299 chipset) Motherboard. This motherboard is Asus’s highest-end in their ROG series, and it’s currently their flagship motherboard for 2017 suitable for all Intel Skylake-X and Kaby Lake-X processors. It’s absolutely packed with great features that’s both impressive and intuitive. The amount of extras you’ll get with this motherboard is truly astounding. It’s the mother of all motherboards!

Here’s a few features that really got our attention. There’s an onboard 10GB LAN port, a DIMM.2 card for M.2 SSDs, a fan controller card, 2-way, 3-way and 4-way SLI bridges, as well as LiveDash OLED display on the I/O hood for diagnostic and motherboard status. There’s also SupremeFX audio, Aura Sync, Extreme Engine Digi+ and more. It’s definitely the most feature-packed motherboard I’ve come across to date.

The word flagship usually means the best (or the highest-end) in the series, so with this knowledge, I’m already preparing myself for two things … high performance and high price.

Last month we reviewed the ASRock X299 Taichi (ATX) and the EVGA X299 Micro (mATX) motherboards. Both offered very good performance with good overclocking ability and features at a good price. Will the Asus ROG Rampage VI Extreme motherboard match or better the above? Let’s find out …

Please note that this motherboard and all X299 chipset based motherboards, do not support and is not compatible with LGA 1151 processors.

We’ll start by saying a big thanks to Asus ROG for providing the review sample. This is a snippet from what ROG has to say about themselves on their website:

For years since its establishment, ASUS aimed to put an ever-greater emphasis on PC gaming. This process resulted in the 2006 founding of the Republic of Gamers brand (ROG), formed for the sole purpose of delivering the most innovative hardcore hardware for truly dedicated gamers.

Since then, the efforts of the ROG team have led to a constant flow of PC gaming technology that has become legendary among enthusiasts for its performance. ROG is more than just hardware, though – we take an active part in the global gaming community, helping develop the industry by sponsoring events such as PAX and Dreamhack. Worldwide media have recognized ROG as a leader in PC gaming and overclocking performance, with many of our products winning awards and gaining very positive feedback from hardware pros.

With this great response from gamers and the industry, ROG has all the resources it needs to keep working on enabling even better experiences – technology never sleeps, nor should the action!

There are couple of things to look out for. Noticeably, for KabyLake-X processors (i5-7640X and i7-7740X), you’ll only get support dual channel memory with less PCIE 3.0 lanes. Take a look at the table below …

OK, now let’s first take a look at the features and specification of the Intel X299 chipset, then will move on to the Asus ROG Rampage VI Extreme (X299) motherboard itself.

We’ll be testing the Asus ROG Rampage VI Extreme motherboard using our trusty humble Core i5-7640X, along with 8GB G.Skill DDR4-3200 ram, 240GB Patriot Hellfire SSD and a Zotac GeForce GTX 1080.

I’m expecting the ROG Rampage VI Extreme to give us some impressive results and should easily beat its competition in all of our benchmarks.

You can buy the Asus ROG Rampage VI Extreme (X299) Motherboard from various e-tailers such as Newegg for USD $650.00! or alternatively check out the Asus ROG Rampage VI Apex (X299) for $429.00.
