HyperX Cloud Revolver Gaming Headset Review

Thanks to Kingston, we’ll be taking a quick look at the HyperX Cloud Revolver Gaming Headset. It features large 50mm directional drivers, over-ear ear cups, solid-steel frame, detachable noise-cancelling microphone and of course HyperX’s signature memory foam. The version I’ll be reviewing features the 3.5mm audio jack (not the Cloud Revolver S version which already reviewed and features the USB audio control box giving you 7.1 Dolby surround sound).

You’re probably asking why I want to review this version? Wouldn’t the USB version be better? Well, I’m a big music fan. I love listening to my music, and the best way to listen to music (in my opinion), is to use the trusted old, but very versatile  3.5mm audio jack. That way  … I can listen to my music AND use it for recording on both my PC/laptop AND on my smartphone/camera!

The Box and Packaging

The box and packaging is slick and glossy. It shows a picture of the headset along with the list of features. Inside the box, you’ll find the quick start guide, the headset itself, the audio control box featuring the 3.5mm plugs and the the detachable noise-cancelling microphone.

The Headset

Right away, you can see and feel the quality of the headset when its in your hands. The review version we received is the gun-metal grey/black. The audio cables are braided/sleeved which is a good sign of quality.

A Closer Look

Initially, I though the HyperX logo and design on the headset would glow … but I was wrong. The gun-metal version has the white logo, while the black version will have the red logo instead.

You can see the solid-steel frame below, which gives the headset both durability and reliability. The large over-ear ear cups along with the adjustable headband, allow many hours of comfortable wear. You can turn this headset in to a normal set of headphones by removing the detachable noise-cancelling microphone at anytime. The audio control box features mute and volume controls and splits into 2 separate 3.5mm plugs … one for the microphone and the other for the headphone.

Audio Quality

Thanks to its large 50mm directional drivers which is positioned parallel to the ears, you get crisp, precise audio with enhanced bass. Although this version only offer stereo sound, I was still immersed while playing PUBG.

And OMG … the audio quality from listening on my iPhone while streaming my favourite tracks from Spotify, was just sublime. I got crisp highs, full mid-range and nice beefy bass. If I’m not gaming, I can just use them as if they were a normal pair of high-quality headphones, without any reservations.

Recording Quality

The detachable noise-cancelling microphone is truly phenomenal. It’s fully flexible and offer excellent audio recording. It’s so good in fact, I was I able to get high-quality audio while using the headset for my podcasts as well as live streaming. What’s more, I was even able to plug the headset (without the audio control box) directly in to my iPhone 6S audio jack and start recording right away without any dongles.

Conclusion and Verdict

I’ve never been a fan of headsets that use USB connectors. It just limits its versatility. Don’t get me wrong, there are some great gaming headsets that uses USB connectors, which allows you to have more controls and features, such as RGB and Dolby 7.1 surround. For me, I’m old skool … and I like the trusted old 3.5mm audio jacks. It just means I can use this headset for any audio device that still uses the 3.5mm jack. In other words, I can’t plug a USB headset in to a smartphone, audio mixer or my MP3 player.

And for this reason … this is why I think HyperX has done a excellent job in keeping people like me hooked. They are one of only a few manufacturers that still produce gaming headsets that uses the 3.5mm jack.

As far as audio quality is concerned, you can’t go wrong. It gives you crisp, precise audio with enhanced bass thanks to its large 50mm directional drivers. The large over-ear ear cups allows you to fully immerse yourself while gaming, while the HyperX memory foam, adjustable headband and solid-steel frame, gives you many hours of comfortable wear.
