SanDisk Ultra 3D SSD 1TB Review

Thanks to SanDisk, we’ll be taking a quick look at the Ultra 3D SSD 1TB (2.5″ form factor). The 1TB model we’ll be reviewing uses the latest 3D NAND technology and boasts a read speed of up to 560MB/sec with a write speed of up to 530MB/sec. In terms of specs, this SSD is virtually identical to the WD Blue 3D NAND SSD which we reviewed earlier last week. That’s because it uses the same super fast Marvell 88SS1074 controller, as well as the same 3D NAND chips.

So are they the same drive but repackaged with a different firmware? I can go as far as to say … most probably, since WD bought SanDisk last year (2016). Why waste the effort in producing 2 different SSDs … one for WD and one for SanDisk, when all you have to do is just produce one, and repackage/rename them.

Any how, we will be testing the SanDisk Ultra 3D SSD 1TB on our test rig which is comprised of an Intel Core i5-7640X, EVGA X299 Micro motherboard, 8Gb of Trident-Z DDR4-3200 ram and a Zotac GeForce GTX 1080.

For those who don’t know what 3D NAND is all about … you can check out Wiki’s website for more information.

3D NAND flash is a type of flash memory in which the memory cells are stacked vertically in multiple layers. Flash manufacturers developed 3D NAND to address challenges they encountered in scaling 2D/planar NAND technology to achieve higher densities at a lower cost per bit.

I would like to thank SanDisk for providing this review sample! Let us see what they have to say about themselves on their website:

For more than 27 years, SanDisk has been transforming digital storage with breakthrough products and ideas that push the boundaries of what’s possible. Our flash memory technologies are used by many of the world’s leading data centers, embedded in the most advanced smartphones, tablets, and laptops, and are trusted by consumers around the world. From handheld devices to hyper-scale data centers, SanDisk is expanding the possibilities of storage.

SanDisk-branded products are used by top electronics companies and can be found in enterprise data centers worldwide, so consumers can be confident their important data is at their fingertips.

I’m expecting the performance of the SanDisk Ultra 3D SSD to be the same, if not identical to the WD Blue 3D NAND SSD. It uses the same super fast Marvell 88SS1074 controller, and of course the same 3D NAND technology. Let’s see check out the specifications on our next page.

Surprisingly, you can buy the SanDisk Ultra 3D SSD 1TB a little bit cheaper than the WD Blue 3D NAND SSD for only USD $285 from Amazon – http://amzn.to/2zcvUn8
