Intel Internet-of-Things (IoT)

We have been hearing for years now the possibility of one day having self-driving cars.  Recently, Google has been working hard at making this a reality, and now the tech tycoon Intel has thrown their hat into the ring.  The newest project by the originally CPU-based company is known as the Internet-of-Things, a highly ambitious move to integrate machine learning and cloud computing into the myriad of everyday devices.  Essentially, Intel has acquired rights to begin work on Computer Vision, a system that seeks to grant computers a level of real-time interpretation and processing ability never before seen.  Using this technology, cars could theoretically become as self-aware and safe a driver as the human passenger(s).  And the possibilities do not end there; Intel IoT is being considered for other devices like security cameras, household appliances, and much more.  Using sophisticated human-computer interaction software, these devices can learn specific patterns of use and make the convenience we enjoy all the more personal.

The suggested level of connection between humans and hardware is hardly new; we’ve seen autonomous machines that can plan your daily ritual in sci-fi movies and novels as well as expos and demos.  But with the combination of expertise and available technology, such devices may no longer be just a flight of fancy.  We are getting ever closer to bridging the gap between man and machine.  Such technology would surely have a home in medicine and safety, especially palliative care,  aeronautics, and internet security.  To say this is a big development is an understatement, and we will be sure to keep you updated as new developments unfold.  In the mean time, just picture how great it would be to plan your next vacation without the headache of worrying about staying awake during the twelve-hour trip.

These devices will use the power of Intel technology to process data being generated from “things,” connect to and learn from data being analyzed in the cloud, and deliver amazing new experiences.

That’s why, on May 25, Intel signed a definitive agreement to acquire Itseez Inc., an expert in Computer Vision (CV) algorithms and implementations for embedded and specialized hardware.

This is the “autonomous era,” and machine learning and computer vision will become critical for all kinds of machines – cars among them.
