What is RFID? How is RFID Employed in Real World Objects?

What is RFID?

RFID or Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) employs electromagnetic fields to identify, recognize and locate the tags which are attached to various objects and are used for tracking. These tags have information inside them which is saved and stored electronically. As of now, the RFID Card Technology is employed and utilized in various industries. Several real-world applications use RFID technology to perform the associated essential operations.

Real World Industrial Usage of Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) Technology

  • Racing Events

Starting with a pretty simple example, RFID technology is used to calculate and keep track of marathon timings of athletes. In fact, not only marathon RFID is used to keep track and time of various other sports events like car racing, bike racing etc.

  • RFID Attendee tracking system

During a big business conference, it is almost impossible to maintain a line of registration at the entrance. Due to the huge number of participants, it becomes almost impossible to keep a track. Hence, the RFID Attendee tracking system is used in which participants and attendees are given cards which are affixed with Ultra high-frequency RFID tags. This way location of each and every person who is taking part in the business conference can be tracked.

This is a good way to take care of attendance and it facilitates the elimination of registration lines. Moreover, statistics captured by the RFID attendee tracking system can also be used to calculate certain marketing and business intelligence vitals.

  • Inventory tracking

Whenever you visit a big supermarket, you must have seen employees holding a hand-held device. These hand-held devices are actually RFID readers and are used to count the items and keep track of the inventory.

RFID makes it possible to keep a track of the items right from the supplier to the point of sale. Moreover, counting the entire inventory is only a matter of minutes with the aid and assistance of the RFID technology.

  • Access Control

Employees working in an IT company or any other industry whatsoever are given employee ID cards which are fitted with RFID tags. These tags, apart from keeping track of the attendance of an employee, help to maintain access control as well. With the help of RFID tags; the access provided to an employee can be controlled. Certain areas which a particular employee is not meant to access can be kept as out-of-bounds for him/her. Moreover, if repeated attempts are made to access the prohibited area; an alert is immediately sent to the control center and the employee is contacted as well as communicated of the same.

  • Tracking assets provided to an employee

A company can have various assets like laptops , tablets etc. which are provided to the employees as and when required. These assets are fitted with RFID tags to keep track of the item and the same is scanned as and when an employee leaves or enters the organization.

Apart from the above mentioned real-world uses, RFID technology is used in various other areas too like keeping track of the books in the library and in logistics. Thus, we can safely conclude that RFID technology is used in various industries and is vital for the survival of various important operations.
