Wing’s Blog – Prime Lens & Overwatch Stress Levels

Prime Lens

After all these years of owning a intermediate level DSLR with my stock lens and holiday lens, and with much persuasion from my cousin, I finally went out and bought a prime lens for my Canon. Nothing to0 fancy, just the Canon 50mm f/1.8 STM, but wow does it improve the image quality.

Prime Lens

I must stop hear to put my hand up and admit that I don’t really know how to take care of my gear. On removing the holiday lens from the camera body, I notices a white smudgy film on the inner most piece of glass of the lens……thats why I’ve been getting blurry, opaque shots….dammit!!! Or knowing what all the acronyms mean; I had to ask the shop owner what STM stands for…

Back to the prime lens. With no zoom whatsoever I’m forced to go back to basics and either walk closer or further away from an object so that I can frame it in my photo properly. Little things like this benefit an lazy ass like myself, it forces me to learn new skills without having to rely on the easy route (zoom). And the photo quality overall is much better; sharper, clearer and better colors. No more distorted edges now.

Prime Lens

Being at f/1.8, I no longer have to struggle to get bokeh, the blurry background you want when you take a close up photo, but the downside is I like big massive lens on my camera; it makes me feel better about myself, much like those old guys that drive sports cars. With a prime lens mounted on my camera, it looks like small pimple sticking out of the front, I just feel…..inadequate.

For just HK$750, there’s really no excuse not to pick up a prime lens though. Playing with for one just for a day will improve your photography knowledge and skill tenfold, but more importantly, your wife/GF/she who must be obeyed/dog will love you more because of the better photos you can now take of her/it.
