One of the most popular tech we saw at HKEF 2016 was drones; from full-blooded 6 bladed ones to mini-drones not much larger than a matchbox, so 2016 is set for drones to gain even more popularity. There were so many stands at HKEF showing off their drones, I couldn’t even list them all here!
If we take just one small step back and realize just how much the popularity for drones in the consumer market has increased by since the first sales non-military unmanned drones in the US in 2013. The more popular brands, such as DJI, 3D Robotix, Parrot, Airbotix, and Blade, have really taken hold of the consumer drone market, but in the last 12 months we’ve seen more and more smaller brands popping up to offer more affordable drones to the enthusiasts. Drone users initially wanted to be able to capture video clips and/or photos from aerial angles that were previously out of their reach, but now with innovation firmly driving the drone market, we’ve seen a rise of FPV (first person view) drone flying and drone-racing, with ESPN sports broadcaster announcing they will start covering drone-racing with the US National Drone Racing Championships in August.
MiniWing
First off, at the HKEF we were impressed on with MiniWing’s stand at HKEF. Comprising of an area that would have housed 10 other stands, MiniWing set out to really impress with their drone product, not only having them on display but also a netted-off demonstration area where a working version was being controlled by a representative.
MiniWing was only formed last year in 2015, and is based in the Westlake District of Hangzhou in China. Researching for this article on the company was met with a lack of information on the internet, most probably due to how recent the company was formed. Apart from the A380 drone that we will go into later, MiniWing also produces the Camille, a cycling action camera that not only shoots video clips and photos, but with a GPS, 6 -Axis motion sensor and altimeter, it can track your cycling route and record it on their smartphone app which is currently only available for iPhones, with an Android version in development.
