HKEF 2016 – SJCAM M20 Action Camera Preview

One of the highlights of HKEF was the SJCAM stand. We had previously quickly talked about their SJ4000 in our HK Pet Show 2016 Funky Kits Part 2, and at the SJCAM stand we managed to have play with their vast range of action cameras and accessories.

With the company motto being “Empower Your Dreams”, SJCAM is based in the Longgang district of Shenzhen, China. Commonly known in Chinese as ‘山狗’, in 2014, SJCAM released their first action camera, the SJ4000 with the same form factor as a GoPro action cameras at the time, bringing with it many comparisons and comments from users around the world, with many labelling the SJ4000 as being a ‘clone’. At the time, with GoPro dominating the action camera market with their marketing strategy, users were asking for cheaper alternatives to the rather pricey GoPro range. With the SJ4000 retailing for around HK$1000, it offered an affordable solution to those that wanted to experiment with action cameras, and then later for DIY drone enthusiasts that wanted a product that was priced so that they were not afraid of sending it up into the skies mounted on their drones.

With the vast success of the SJ4000, many other competitors saw how hungry the market was for inexpensive action cameras, thus leading to the wide range of other smaller branded action cameras we now have today. With the success also brought copies of the SJ4000, and you can find guides on the internet on how to tell the difference, with SJCAM even having an authentication page on their website, so you can check if you have bought an original one or not. Not content with the SJ4000, being able to shoot 1080/30fps or 720p/60fps, updated versions, the SJ4000 WiFi (with extra wifi capabilities) and SJ4000+ (shooting 2K/30fps or 1080p/60fps) quickly followed to meet the demands of the consumers.

Before the end of 2014 was out, SJCAM had already released the SJ5000 action camera series, which boasted improved performance by having a large LCD screen and able to take better photos by adding a better sensor. One would have thought that SJCAM would be content for the year, but no, breaking away from the shape and size of the SJ4000/5000, SJCAM also released the M10 series, a compact cube-shaped action camera that had the same performance as the SJ4000 but much smaller.

At the HKEF, Mandy Ma was kind enough to showcase some of their products around the stand for Winston.

SJCAM M20

The SJCAM M20 will be the brand’s newest range of action cameras, and we were informed that it will be released next month in May. Slightly larger than the M10, the SJCAM M20 is shaped as an arched cube, allowing the user to now shoot in 4K and be remotely controlled by bluetooth. SJCAM also has bluetooth controllers both on a watch-like accessory and on a selfie stick.

M20 Specs

Lets just say we are pumped for the SJCAM M20. No details of pricing was given, but we are sure that it will definitively be very competitive. With its inbuilt gyro, the SJCAM M20 will take better video clips and photos, helping to reduce much camera shake.
