SEGA Announces Sonic Mania Collector’s Edition

After it leaked on Amazon, Sega today officially announced a cool-looking collector’s edition for Sonic Mania. The centerpiece of the bundle is a 12″ Sonic statue who stands on a base modeled after the Sega Genesis. You can even flip a switch to play the famous “SEEGAA” startup audio.

Additionally, the Sonic Mania collector’s edition comes with a metallic collector’s card that contains a download code for the game. There is also a Sega cartridge and a golden ring. All of this comes inside of a collector’s box themed around the Sega Genesis.

According to the Sonic Twitter account, this collector’s edition is only for North America. A price was not officially specified, but the Amazon page lists it for $70, while the artwork above shows it will be available for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC.

The tweet links to a preorder page, but the site does not appear to be operational right now.

Announced in July, Sonic Mania is a 2D platformer that features visuals and gameplay reminiscent of the classic Sega Genesis games. It revamps zones and acts from Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Sonic CD, Sonic the Hedgehog 3, and Sonic & Knuckles, in addition to introducing new ones into the fold.

The game is developed by Sega of America in collaboration with PagodaWest Games. Christian Whitehead and Simon Thomley, the people behind the remastered Sonic ports on mobile devices, are also helping with development. Sonic Team head Takashi Iizuka said at the announcement event in July that we’ll learn more about the game later this year.

Sonic Mania is scheduled to launch on all platforms in spring 2017.

It’s not the only Sonic game in the works, as Sonic Team is working on a brand-new entry in the series that is said to feature both classic and modern versions of Sonic, much like 2011’s Sonic Generations. No title has been revealed, but we do know that it’s coming holiday 2017 on PS4, Xbox One, and the Nintendo NX.
