Tesla Creating Its Own Autonomous Vehicle Chip With AMD

Tesla is planning to use its own chip for future versions of its autonomous vehicle system and it’s working with AMD on the project, says CNBC. The company has been working with Nvidia and currently uses Nvidia GPUs to power Autopilot. It’ll shift away from third-party components with the chip it’s now developing.

Prototypes of the new processor have reportedly already been delivered. As long as Tesla continues down this path, it’ll have a more reliable supply chain and could also improve the performance of its system.

Autopilot is led by Jim Keller, who worked on processors at AMD and Apple. His work experience could have pushed Tesla in this direction.
