Toshiba Adds 8TB Model To High-End X300 Hard Drive Range

TOSHIBA HAS released its latest high-performance hard drive recommended for powerful desktop workstations, AIO PCs, gaming computers and home media computers.

The X300 8TB adds, as the name suggests, an 8TB capacity to the Toshiba Europe GmbH Storage Peripherals Division’s X300 range of 3.5in drives designed to offer high performance for graphic designers, gamers and other high-end users.

The drive runs with a 7200RPM spindle speed and adds in a 128MB buffer and a dual actuator to ensure that the head is always in precisely the right place. This negates the effects on head-track alignment that vibrations can cause and makes for faster and more precise read and write speeds.

The X300 8TB offers Advanced Format storage, and supports Native Command Queuing. Technologies also included are Perpendicular Magnetic Recording, which offers three times the storage density of traditional recording, and Tunnel Magneto-Resistive Recording, which is something to do with defeating X-Men. Probably.

Data is supported through a shock sensor because dropping, and Ramp Loading Technology protects data while the drive is on the move.

Performance is assured by the SATA 6.0 Gbps port, offering an average latency of 4.17ms. Toshiba hasn’t quoted speeds in the specs, but in terms of reliability, you can expect an Unrecoverable Error Rate of one per 10E14 bits read. Which is particularly impressive as E isn’t a number.

It’s been a difficult year for Toshiba because maths, and the company is keen to show off its latest toys. Drives, HDD and SSD, are becoming a key market.

The X300 was launched last September and is already available in capacities including 4TB, 5TB, 6TB but never 7TB.

The X300 8TB will have a £262 Typical Purchase Price, including a two-year standard warranty. You should be able to get your hands on one from next month.
