Canon’s New W-E1 WiFi Adapter Is An Eye-Fi Competitor

The latest Canon leak appears to confirm some rumored details for the upcoming W-E1 WiFi adapter. Designed to provide a connection for cameras without built-in WiFi, the W-E1 will take the form of an SD card, much like Eye-Fi cards.

The leaked image of the W-E1 comes via Nokishita Rumors. This follows an alleged leak back in July by Digicame, of the adapter’s specifications. Those specifications listed the dimensions of the adapter as 24x32x2.1mm, the same as an SD card.

The image supplied by Nokishita was accompanied with some other details, including a short list of cameras that will be compatible with the W-E1 with the V.1.1.0 firmware update installed. Namely, the EOS 7D Mark II, the EOS 5DS, and the EOS 5DS-R.

Unlike some similar adapters such as Eye-Fi, the W-E1 will not act as a storage card and will only be usable with cameras that have a dual card slot.

However, it’s better than nothing and this should prove remarkably useful to users of older cameras that lack WiFi connectivity. The range of 10 metres isn’t spectacular but realistically it only needs to be able to transfer data as far as your phone or laptop.
