Sony A6400 Camera Reviewed by Engadget

This is THE camera I will be getting soon … real soon!

Sony’s 24.2-megapixel A6400 APS-C camera was a surprise, filling a gap between the A6300 and A6500 that didn’t really need to be filled. Both in how it looks and the technology inside, it didn’t seem like a great leap over the A6300. It also lacks important features (like in-body stabilization) found in the A6500. However, with 4K video, a pop-up screen, a microphone jack and reasonable $900 price tag, I thought it might make a great poor-man’s vlogging camera.

Pros

  • Excellent eye- and face-tracking autofocus
  • Fast burst shooting speeds
  • Improved programmable buttons
  • Sharp video

Cons

  • Bad rolling shutter
  • No in-body stabilization
  • Dated sensor
  • No headphone port

Summary

Sony’s A6400 is a mixed bag. It’s essentially a rebadged A6300 with the same sensor and thus the same image quality, but a new a flip-up screen. It’s not as good a vlogging or video camera as we expected, because it lacks in-body stabilization and has terrible rolling shutter. However, it’s a great camera for photography thanks to what is possibly the best tracking autofocus system on the market, period. On the whole, it’s a bit disappointing by Sony’s standards and for the same money, Fujifilm’s new X-T30 looks like a better option.
