Kingston MobileLite Wireless Review

In today’s competitive market for mobile devices, be it smartphones, tablets or otherwise, power consumption is a major headache for a lot of manufacturers. We often hear people say … “my battery sucks” or “my device don’t even last a day”.  This is no surprise and quite normal in fact. Getting a full day’s use out of your mobile device, especially a high-end smartphone, is more than one can ask.

If you think about it, as mobile devices get more powerful, so will their power consumption increase … draining battery power more quickly.  And the reason why? Well, what we’re seeing are mobile devices featuring not just dual-core, but quad-core processors … and soon there will be six, or even eight core variants on the horizon. All these mobile processors, no matter how “energy efficient”, still require a sufficient amount of power and therefore a need for larger capacity batteries. Sure, just use a larger capacity battery and that will fix the issue, problem is … a larger capacity battery will mean a heavy device, that’s thicker and larger in dimension. That’s something consumers don’t want.

So what’s the solution? Well, for the past several years, there have been many after-market and 3rd party manufacturers producing portable chargers for mobile devices. This in fact, has actually helped a lot of users who travel, and use their mobile devices a lot. These portable chargers tend to feature a USB port for charging and re-charging, and they come in all shapes and sizes, with various capacities.

Thanks to Kingston Technology, we’ll be taking a look at their MobileLite Wireless device … it’s a portable USB charger for mobile devices that doubles as a wireless USB and SD card reader. A downloadable App allows you to access the files wirelessly. It’s compatible for both Apple and Android devices. Let’s take a closer look …

Here’s a little about Kingston’s MobileLite Wireless taken from their press release …

MobileLite Wireless is the next generation of the innovative Wi-Drive® portable wireless storage device Kingston® released in 2011, for Apple and Android devices. The new reader is enhanced as it wirelessly streams movies, music, photos and documents from USB Flash drives, microSD (with included adapter) and SD/SDHC/SDXC cards. MobileLite Wireless also serves as an emergency mobile charger when the user’s phone battery gets low.

Kingston’s new MobileLite Wireless is the ultimate companion to keep up with one’s active lifestyle, giving users access to unprecedented mobile essentials at a great price. It is as easy as plugging in any USB Flash drive into the USB port to quickly watch and share movies or view and share files wirelessly on mobile devices. The SD/SDHC/SDXC slot enables fast, easy sharing of images with friends and family by removing the card from a camera and plugging it directly into the MobileLite Wireless. The included adapter allows the same access and sharing for microSD cards used in many mobile phones and tablets.

Looking at the specs, I noticed that the MobileLite Wireless features a built-in Li-Polymer battery that has a charging capacity 1800mAh, which I think is a little on the low side. Most chargers that I’ve come across tend to have a much higher charging capacity of at least 3000-6000mAh, especially for higher-end mobile devices.

For charging mobile devices, we’ll testing the MobileLite Wireless on the iPhone 4 and Blackberry Q10. We’ll also be looking at the MobileLite Wireless app which allows you to access files when the unit has a USB flash drive or SD card installed. You can download from Apple’s App store or Google’s Play store. OK, let’s not waste any more time and see what Kingston’s MobileLite Wireless has to offer …
