Desklab Ultralight Portable 4K Touchscreen Monitor Review

Conclusion and Verdict

If you are in need of a portable monitor, then Desklab has that may be offering everything you may need. One thing both of the other portable monitors I have used in the past hasn’t had is touch screen. So, I was excited to try out this feature. And let me tell I was I missing out on that feature. Having touch capabilities, quite honestly, is one the handiest features to have on a portable monitor. I found it quicker to interact with my second monitor with my had rather than my mouse. This can vary depending on your task but closing windows or scrolling pages was nice to do with my finger. Felt like home, as much as I do that with my phone.

This monitor has a nice quality to the build. The frame feels rigid even though it’s so thin and the overall quality is quite high. Some of the specs and testing results may surprise you as they did me. This monitor has great color coverage, peak brightness over 500, contrast that exceeds 1000:1. This could easily be used a portable gaming monitor. This monitors main objective is to make your life better while on the go. And that it does with the awesome colors and features. Oh, I almost forgot about the speakers. This actually has speakers. They are not going to replace your desktop speakers but offer a similar experience to what you would find on any other tablet.

Now for my opinion about the aesthetics AS far as my initial impression goes, the monitor is thin and is sturdy but not too heavy. The entire front is glass and has a refined look to it. Then reality hit and I was concerned there was so much glass. One drop or bad placement in a bookbag and this thing would probably suffer worse fate than a phone. So, you will need to keep this thing protected as you would anything else that was so much glass. I am not saying this glass won’t hold up well over time. I just wouldn’t toss this thing around like a tablet. As beautiful as it is the glass is breakable and could suffer damage if not taken care of properly. I have wiped the front screen down several times and haven’t noticed any scratching or scuffing to speak of. No where can I find a rating of the hardness but from what I can tell the hardness is in line with what you would find on your typical phone. They do make tempered glass covers for this size of screen and that would be my first add-on. It’s the first thing to go on my phone screen and would be the first thing to go on this. Accidents happen and having that extra layer of protection on something that will be used on the go, is a must.

Lastly, the 4K resolution. This something you typically won’t find on a screen this small. You will probably want to bump up the scale because the text will be super small at default. But the crisp 4K display will definitely show up when compared to 1080p.

The cheapest portable monitor with similar specs I could find was an obscure brand and it was $240 and it was hard to find information about the monitor nor did you get the warranty you get with this monitor. Monitors like this one can range from the $240 no-name brands to a staggering $800+. So this monitor at $399.99 is a fair deal. I would like to have seen the cover included with this, but it is sold separately for $50.00 USD. They also have a lot of accessories as well so be sure to check those out.
