Noctua NH-D15S chromax.black CPU Cooler Review

Closer Look / Product Photos

The NH-D15S chromax.black cooler comes in a black box with well-described specifications and package contents. Inside are a well-protected cooler and additional accessories. Everything is just perfect.

In the box is a cooler, a sticker with Noctua logo, thermal grease, low-noise adaptor, an NF-A15 fan, mounting kits for all popular desktop platforms, and a screwdriver. Pretty much everything we may need to install our new cooler.

Installation isn’t hard and shouldn’t cause any problems, especially if we stick to the user’s manual, which describes every step well.

The NH-D15 requires a PC case with space for at least 165mm tall cooler because of the size. The cooler itself has 160mm but better to be sure than sorry after the purchase. Many large ATX cases have space for up to 170mm coolers. On the other hand, many new series are designed for smaller air coolers while having dedicated space made with AIO water cooling in mind. Either way, I recommend remembering the size of the cooler if we decide on the NH-D15S.

The cooler is designed for high compatibility. We can install it on ITX motherboards, as you can see in the photos below. We can also use it with really tall memory modules. Because of its asymmetric design, it leaves additional space between the CPU and the first PCIe slot what is really helpful if we use higher gaming series graphics cards, which are usually large. Some motherboards, even those in ATX size, have a CPU socket close to the first PCIe slot, and then the standard NH-D15 cooler is touching the graphics card or is really close to it.

The NH-D15S chromax.black can be equipped with two fans. As you can see below, the second fan is not causing any interference when two memory modules are in use. When we use all four on larger motherboards, we may need to install the fan higher, requiring more space in the PC case.

The cooler looks great, not only in wholly black builds. Even though there are no RGB LEDs, then it fits well in computers with additional lighting or black and white builds.

For most users, the most important is the performance, so let’s move to the next page to check how the NH-D15S chromax.black performs on the latest AMD platforms.
