Scythe Big Shuriken 3 CPU Cooler Review

After the Scythe Fuma 2 cooler, presented earlier this month, we have something for all those who are thinking about a small, yet high-performance PC. In this review, we will taking a look at the Scythe Big Shuriken 3, it’s a cooler which was designed with small computers and ITX size builds on the mind. Recently we are testing CPU coolers on the latest AMD Ryzen 3000 platform, and this will be the case also with the Big Shuriken 3. Used by us Ryzen 3700X processor is a good test for all CPU coolers.

Stay with us to find out how much to offer has the Big Shuriken 3. Of course, we will start with the specifications and features.

The third generation of the Big Shuriken CPU cooler comes with several important improvements, such as the new, asymmetrical heatsink design for unrestricted memory compatibility and the newly developed Kaze Flex 120 Slim PWM fan with 17 mm thickness. Users have the possibility to replace the pre-installed fan by using the supplied dedicated screw-set against an aftermarket fan with 25 mm thickness, if ever needed. Thanks to its six high quality, nickel-plated copper Heatpipes and the large cooling surface, Big Shuriken 3 is built to deliver superb cooling performance and outstanding compatibility to latest ITX and HTPC systems at a total height of only 69 mm.

Asymmetrical Design for Outstanding Compatibility

Big Shuriken 3 has been completely re-designed with the goal to significantly improve the compatibility. This has been achieved by shifting the base-plate to the sides in contrast to regular designs with centered base-plates. In order to avoid collisions with the I/O shields of motherboards, the entire cooling fin stack has been revamped. Thanks to this new asymmetrical heatsink design, Big Shuriken 3 is able to deliver unrestricted RAM compatibility and distinguishes itself as the perfect cooling solution for high-end HTPC and ITX systems.

Kaze Flex 120 Slim PWM Fan

In order to keep the Big Shuriken 3 as low as possible, the newly developed Slim fan from the Kaze Flex series with a height of 17 mm has been used. In spite of its reduced thickness, an average life-span of 100 000 hours is achieved thanks to the self-contained fluid dynamic bearing (FDB). Kaze Flex 120 Slim PWM inherits also the rubber decouplers for reduction of vibration transfer as well as the PWM fan control ability.

Versatile Fan Mounting

For the cases, where more performance is required and enough headroom for extra height is available, users are able to equip the Big Shuriken 3 with a regular aftermarket 120 mm case fan with 25 mm thickness. The required set of screws is part of the scope of delivery and allows a fast installation process out of the box.

H.P.M.S. III Mounting System
Big Shuriken 3 comes with the secure and user-friendly third generation Hyper Precision Mounting System, which centers around a preassembled mounting bar with spring-loaded screws to guarantee perfect contact pressure. In combination with an updated backplate and rubber / plastic spacers, the system is able to offer a convenient installation process and compatibility to all current sockets including socket AM4 from AMD™ and the socket LGA 2066 from Intel™.
