A Closer Look
Upon closer inspection, the first thing that grabs my attention is how light this cooler feels. The plastic construction seems quite durable despite its light weight. Immediately following that initial impression, my eyes were locked onto the large 140mm fan. This fan has Blue LEDs and is capable of pushing approximately 54 CFM at 29 dBa, which is slighty more audible than the Massive 14², however still an acceptable noise level. The protective mesh surface is metal in nature and very sturdy. There are other coolers out there that have a very light material for the mesh which can lead to issues with warping. Thankfully, Thermaltake went with the heavier mesh, which is still surprisingly light.
The profile of this cooler is thin towards the front and increasing in size towards the rear in order to accomodate the speakers. I would still consider this a very portable cooler.
Zooming in a little more, we discover that the protective speaker grills double as the switch, which is a very nice touch to hide excess dials and buttons. Simply turn the grill counter-clockwise to increase fan speed and vice versa.
Located on the right side of the cooler are two USB ports, an audio input port, the speaker on/off switch which doubles as a speaker grill, and a fan LED on/off switch. As with the Massive 14², the downside here is that one of the USB ports will always be in use in order to power the cooler, so effectively you do not gain a USB port. However, on the plus side you do not lose one either.
Also located near the front on the top of the cooler are two rubber pads that are designed to keep your laptop from sliding down the incline.
Here we can get a view of the underside of the cooler, which is of the same plastic contruction. The fan grill is also plasic and is not removeable.
Located on the underside of the cooler are also four rubber feet, as one would expect. Not only do these help to stabilize the setup, these feet also help to absorb vibration which in turn reduces noise. All good things here.
Now that we have taken a closer look at the Thermaltake Massive SP, we will move on to the finished looks and performance overview!
