GEIL EVO X DDR4-3000 16GB Dual Channel Memory Kit Review

The Box and Packaging

The box and packaging is neat and compact. In side the box, you’ll find the two 8GB modules giving you a 16GB kit (dual channel). Each module is individual encased in a plastic blister pack.

A Closer Look

The memory modules come with some nice heat spreaders but are a lot taller than other modules I’ve tested. There is a LED strip at the top of the memory modules, as well as the EVO X logo, which will light up when your system is powered up. You’ll also find a red slider at the top of the modules, which allows you to select the LED colours of either Red, Green, Blue or RGB cycle.

Each module comes with a 4-pin RGB powe cable which is compatible with motherboards that support the Asus Aura Sync or MSI Mystic Light Sync. If your motherboard does not have the 4-pin RGB header, you can power the RGB illumination on the memory modules via the 3-pin 9v/12v cable provided.

WARNING: Do not plug both cables in. It’s either one of the other.

Installation

No issues with installation here. Just make sure you match the notch on the memory module to the motherboard DIMM slots. Another thing you’ll need to be aware of, is the height of these EVO X memory modules. They are a lot taller than other memory modules on the market, so anyone with a watercooling setup will need to make sure you have plenty of room around the DIMM slots.

Using the slider on the top of the modules, we manged to get the three RGB colours – Red, Green and Blue. Since our ASRock motherboard did not have the 4-pin RGB header, this was achieved using the 3-pin 9v/12v power cable which we plugged directly in to the motherboard fan header.
