Kingston HyperX Fury 8GB DDR3-1866 CL10 Memory Review


 

Performance

The Kingston HyperX Fury DDR3-1866 memory kit has been tested on our usual platform, the Intel i5 3570K CPU and motherboard based on Z87 chipset. In this case it is the ASRock Z87M OC Formula with the latest BIOS/UEFI.

 

AIDA64 Memory and Cache Benchmark

AIDA64 tests are good to compare multithreaded performance of the system memory. This memory benchmark does not take much time; so we run it multiple times to check the consistency of the results. It is also one of the best tools used to test memory performance that is available on the market.

The AIDA64 tests show us that the HyperX Fury is a fast memory kit. There are no issues with the read or write transfers as both are pretty good. However the memory copy result is not as high as expected due to 4GB single-sided modules. Double sided modules used in 16GB kits perform slightly better as shown in the last result of the table.

MaxxMem Preview is similar to the AIDA64 program and is a reliable benchmark to show single threaded performance. Also here we find a similar situation with the memory read and write results being high while the memory copy is slightly lower than the 16GB memory kits. We can also see that the single threaded test results are already limited by the CPU and memory controller speed; so nearly all of the memory kits are achieving similar results in the memory write test.

 

 

Cinebench R15

Cinebench is a rendering benchmark which is heavy on the multithreaded tests. It is a more real-world test which can show us the total computing power of our computer.

The HyperX Fury achieved really good results in this test losing, not by much, to the G.Skill memory which is running at much tighter timings. The results look even better when we compare it to the Crucial memory which is based on double-sided modules and were showing slightly better results in previous tests.

 

 

3DMark Firestrike – IGP

Our final test is a fairly new benchmark test, which is 3DMark Firestrike. I have tested the IGP (Intel HD4600) performance in this 3D test because the integrated graphics utilizes system memory to perform all calculations instead of dedicated onboard memory that we typically find on discrete graphics cards.

The 3DMark Firestrike test shows us the slightly lower performance of the single-sided modules used to build the HyperX Fury kit. Overall the HyperX Fury result is still pretty good and looks better than what we find using even the fastest DDR3-1600 memory.

The HyperX Fury is a memory dedicated for gamers who count on high performance but do not want to spend too much money. I think that the test results are pretty good considering the relaxed timings of the Fury series. We can always pick a 16GB kit if we need slightly better performance.

 

 

Overclocking

Overclocking is never guaranteed so the presented results may vary from results on other memory kits. I am not recommending overclocking if you do not know what are you doing. High voltages may damage hardware and it will not be covered by warranty.

 

The maximum memory clock which passed HyperPi 32M (so pretty stable) was 1400MHz/DDR3-2800 CL12-14-14-35 at 1.70V.

Actually the same settings were needed to make this memory run at DDR3-2600 or 2666 but voltage could be slightly lower.

This is a great result for a memory which was prepared to work at 933MHz/DDR3-1866.

Below we can see test results and table with timings needed to run at 1400MHz. The CPU frequency was the same as in other tests – 4.2GHz.
