Patriot Viper Steel 64GB DDR4-3600 Memory Kit Review

Overclocking

Disclaimer: Overclocking is never guaranteed so that the results may vary depending on certain conditions and various hardware configurations. I am not recommending overclocking if you do not know what you are doing. High voltages may damage hardware, and it will not be covered by warranty.

Overclocking tests were performed on the same setup as all other performance tests. Considering memory capacity and its timing range, not all motherboards let to overclock this memory. Highly recommended is a higher series motherboard with AMD X570 or Intel Z490. These motherboards have optimized BIOS for 32GB memory modules and should overclock significantly better than anything from older series.

The XMP profile has quite relaxed timings looking at available memory kits. Still, we have to remember that these are 32GB modules, so are harder to overclock and run at different timings than we are used to seeing in 8GB or 16GB modules.

After some adjustments to the XMP profile, we could run the Viper Steel 64GB kit at DDR4-3600 CL16-19-19 1.42V what is a pretty good result. You can see expected memory bandwidth and latency on the above screenshot.

The maximum memory clock possible on our memory kit is DDR4-4100 and timings of CL18-24-24-44. The memory required 1.45V to run at these settings, so maybe not low but also still reasonable value.

After checking additional motherboards, we weren’t able to set anything above DDR4-4100. On some motherboards, we couldn’t pass DDR4-4000, so again, your results will highly depend on the motherboard you use and its BIOS. I see that most motherboards with Z490 chipset have early BIOS, which could be tuned some more, so there is a chance we will see higher results on 32GB memory modules soon.

Overclocking doesn’t really make a significant difference in performance on the Viper Steel 64GB memory kit, but even without additional tweaking, the RAM is fast and should satisfy most users.
