Steelseries Apex Gaming Keyboard Review

Closer Look

Now let’s take a closer look at the SteelSeries Apex. I really like the box of the SteelSeries Apex, its simple, has all the necessary information and a big picture of the apex itself.

Then when I opened the box there was another box inside with the Apex itself. Packed in a plastic bag to protect against dust.

Then we actually come the the keyboard itself.

Steelseries Apex unboxed

Its a very big keyboard with big buttons and enough space between them, you also have a huge space bar, its very nice.

Its a fairly heavy keyboard and the build quality is great as well, I would rather not get hit by one. We also have a strong braided cable, i really do prefer that to other rubber-ish cables, just because they just feel better and get less (or not) entangled.

Another thing I really like on a keyboard is independent media keys, I love to listen to music when working on my computer and I find it annoying to always go to iTunes to pause or to adjust the volume in windows. So with media keys on your keyboard you can just: Pause/Play, Mute, select next song, select previous song and change the volume up or down.

On the back of the keyboard we have 2x USB 2.0 Ports, another cool feature if you just want to connect a mouse or a USB-stick into your computer without plugging it into the back of your computer or in the frontpanel.

And now i will take a look at probably the best part of the keyboard: The lights!

On the Apex you have 5 main ‘color zones’ witch means 5 areas you can choose separate colors for. For the colors itself you can choose out of 16.8 Million colors!!!
And the best thing is: you can set up 4 layers of separate color schemes you can easily switch to with buttons on the keyboard. And if you want to keep your 4 color schemes but also want to try different things? then you can just make another Profile in the steelseries engine, The steelseries engine is a piece of awesome software were you can make and set profiles for all your Steelseries peripherals: Mice, Keyboard and headset. Its really simple to make, change and edit profiles in the engine.
