ASRock X299 Extreme4 Motherboard Review

Overclocking

Overclocking is quite easy on ASRock X299 Extreme4. Simply adjust CPU clock and voltage and there is 4.7GHz at quite low 1.25V. This was the highest stable frequency limited by used cooling. For quick tests was possible to set higher clock like 4.9GHz.

I would even recommend to use manual settings as at auto settings CPU voltage is a bit too high. I guess it’s based on average required voltage for Skylake-X processors and our i9-7900X is overclocking really good at lower voltage.

The main difference between motherboards make memory overclocking. Not many motherboards can pass DDR4-3600 at quite low CL16-16-16 main timing using 4x16GB memory modules. As you can see, no issues on the X299 Extreme4. I have to add that to make memory work better it’s recommended to update BIOS/UEFI to the latest version. It let us set higher frequency also on 8GB modules which work in quad channel mode at DDR4-4000+.

ASRock X299 Extreme4 has many options which are helpful in overclocking. I guess that all who are into overclocking will find the X299 Extreme4 really good to speed up their already fast PC. Together with strong power section and good cooling it’s really solid base for Intel Skylake-X overclocking.

Conclusion and Verdict

We are used to see good ASRock motherboards and it won’t be an exception. The X299 Extreme4 performs well and offers a lot considering it’s one of the cheapest motherboards based on the Intel X299 chipset. It’s hard to find anything better if we wish to build high performance computer with Skylake-X processor but we have to cut costs. ASRock X299 Extreme4 has everything most users will ever need and no useless components and features you have to pay for.

Except high performance there is also high quality and stability. Regardless what CPU we want to use, strong 11 power phases with large heatsinks will take care of everything.

It’s also one of the X299 motherboards which has no issues with memory compatibility. We are also used to that in ASRock motherboards.

The X299 Extreme4 costs less than $200 on the Newegg. I think it’s a great price for what we are receiving and it’s hard to beat by any competition.

Pros:

  • High performance
  • High quality
  • Inexpensive
  • High overclocking potential
  • Dual 8-pin CPU power connectors
  • XXL power section cooling

Cons:

  • Could have a WiFi card instead of M.2 socket for WiFi card.

Final words:

I could call the X299 Extreme4 budget X299 motherboard but it simply sounds wrong. It’s a high-end motherboard in reasonable price which offers a lot. High performance, high overclocking potential and high stability are the key advantages. All what is the most important for gamers and power users.

ASRock X299 Extreme4 is a great motherboard which I can recommend without hesitation. The only reason why there is no Editor’s Choice Award is because ASRock still has better X299 motherboards and that you will see soon on the FunkyKit.
