ASRock X399 Phantom Gaming 6 (Ryzen Threadripper) Motherboard Review

Today, we’ll be taking a quick look at the ASRock X399 Phantom Gaming 6 Motherboard. It uses AMD’s X399 chipset suitable for all AMD Ryzen Threadripper processors (TR4 socket), which includes both the Threadripper 19xx and 29xx series.

It comes with a ton of features such as ASRock’s Super Alloy, 8 Power Phase & Dr. MOS, as well as Phantom Gaming 2.5Gb/s LAN, PCIE steel slots, 3 x Ultra M.2 connectors,  Polychrome RGB Sync, 2 x USB 3.1 Gen2 (both Type-A and Type-C) and 12 x USB 3.1 Gen1 ports. And there’s more …

It also supports DDR4 3400+(OC) ram, NVIDIA 3-Way SLI, AMD 3-Way CrossFireX, 7.1 CH HD Audio with Creative Sound Blaster Cinema 5.

AMD have been receiving a lot of attention and praise recently with regards to their desktop processors. They were the first to introduce to the market a 32 core/64 thread high-end (HEDT) processor, the Ryzen Threadripper 2990WX based on the Zen+ architecture, using use a 12nm FinFET process. And this coming year in 2019, we’ll be seeing Zen 2 based processors using the latest cutting edge 7nm FinFET process. To put this into comparison, their competitor Intel is having production problems with their 14nm fabs for their Coffee Lake processor, and are only just now looking at the 10nm process.

We’ll be testing the ASRock X399 Phantom Gaming 6 motherboard using the Ryzen Threadripper 1950X, which is more than enough for our needs. Seriously.

Here’s a quick comparison guide of all the current Threadripper CPUs on the market right now.

Please note that this motherboard and all X399 chipset based motherboards, do not support and is not compatible with Ryzen 7, Ryzen 5 or Ryzen 3 (AM4) processors.

I would like to thank ASRock for providing the review sample. This is a snippet from what ASRock has to say about themselves on their website:

ASRock Inc. is established in 2002, specialized in the field of motherboards. ASRock strives to build up its own brand. With the 3C design concept, “Creativity, Consideration, Cost-effectiveness”, the company explores the limit of motherboards manufacturing while paying attention on the eco issue at the same time, developing products with the consideration of eco-friendly concept.

ASRock has been growing fast and become world third largest motherboard brand with headquarter in Taipei, Taiwan and branches in Europe and the USA. The young and vibrant company targets from mainstream to enthusiast MB segments for different kinds of users, owning reputation around the world market with its reliability and proficiency.

I expecting good performance from the ASRock X399 Phantom Gaming 6 motherboard. Let’s see how it will perform against the Asus ROG Zenith Extreme and ASRock’s very own X399 Taichi.

You can buy the ASRock X399 Taichi (Ryzen Threadripper) Motherboard from Amazon for around USD $370 – https://amzn.to/2Lar2Ca
