Verdict and Conclusion
So what’s our thoughts on AMD’s new AM5 platform? Well, all I have to say is … this what I’ve been waiting for from AMD, since the announcement of DDR5 ram a couple of years ago. And I’m really glad they followed up on this. AMD’s aging, but still very capable AM4 platform supporting DDR4 ram, has had a good run. So it’s only natural for AMD to take the next step, and implement the support for DDR5 ram on their next-gen AM5 platform. The new AM5 platform features a new LGA1718 socket, but retains the same CPU mounting bracket for cooling, as found on AM4 motherboards. This means you’ll be able to use your existing AM4 CPU cooler, if you make the upgrade to AM5. This is something I really like to applaud AMD for!
We already know the performance benefits you’ll get from running DDR5 ram, and this is evident from the benchmarks we’ve conducted on Intel Z690 motherboards supporting DDR5 ram. Now that the AM5 platform can support DDR5 ram, it will be interesting to see how well it will complete against Intel’s latest Z600/Z700 series.
OK, let’s get back to the ASRock X670E Taichi motherboard. This motherboard uses AMD’s latest X670E chipset support all of AMD’s latest Ryzen 7000 series of processors on the new AM5 socket (LGA1718). It now supports DDR5 ram with speed of up to DDR5-6600+ OC and come with 2 x PCIE 5.0 x16 steel slots.
The motherboard a powerful 24+2+1 Phase Power Design, and SPS for VCore+GT, which is provides extra stability especially when overclocking your processor. To help cool such a power hungry motherboard, you’ll find several large heatsinks to cool the VRMs/Mosfets. It also comes with full cover heatsinks for the Hyper M.2 SSD slots, and a special heatsink + fan for the Blazing M.2 SSD slot (PCI 5.0 Gen5x), which are known to run extremely hot.
A sleek metal backplate on the motherboard also gives it a unique look and helps with the cooling. The DDR5 DIMM slots now come with steel reinforcements, which is great, and you also get surface mount technology on the PCIE 5.0 x16 slots, which gives it better strength and stability while overclocking. Fantastic!
During our tests, we used an AMD Ryzen 9 7900X processor and a GeForce RTX 3090 graphics card. We managed to pull some phenomenal scores in all of our benchmarks, including a Cinebench R23 scores of 27,726 (multi core) and 1,908 (single core). For PCMark 10, we got a score of 9,083, and a score of 9,902 for PassMark9.
For UL’s latest Procyon Photo Editing Benchmark, we got a score of 9,667 and 8,400 for the video editing suite. For 3DMark Speed Way and Port Royal, we got a score of 5,114 and 12,789 respectively. And finally, for Timespy and Firestrike, we got decent scores of 18,139 and 40,407 respectively.
There’s plenty of expansion options available on the X670E Taichi. Let’s start with storage … you get a total of 8 x SATA3 ports, 1 x Blazing M.2 (PCIE Gen5x4) slot and 3 x Hyper M.2 (PCIE Gen4x4) slots for your SSDs. However, you only get 2 x PCIE 5.0 x16 slots, which may seem a little, but if you think about it, most add-on devices can be connected via the USB 3.2 ports (both Type-A and Type-c).
LAN connectivity is powered by the Killer E3100 2.5G LAN and Killer AX1675 802.11ax (WiFi 6E) + Bluetooth, which is super fast and more than enough even for the most avid streamer/gamer. And finally for connectivity, you get a ton … these include ASRock’s Lightning Gaming Ports, 2 x USB4 Type-C (Rear), 1 x USB 3.2 Gen2x2 Type-C (Front), 5 x USB 3.2 Gen2 Type-A (Rear), 7 x USB 3.2 Gen1 (3 Rear, 4 Front), as well as a HDMI port and mic-in, line-out and SPDIF out.

Final Words:
I can’t fault the ASRock X670E Taichi motherboard. If you’ve been waiting to upgrade to the new AM5 platform, then the wait is finally over! This motherboard matches perfectly with all of AMD’s latest Ryzen 7000 series processors, and it’s absolutely packed with some great features from ASRock. Thanks to its native support for DDR5 ram and PCIE 5.0 (everywhere), if offers phenomenal performance that can easily outperform an Intel-based system of similar spec. In my opinion, this is the most significant next-generational jump in performance for AMD.
