NETGEAR Orbi RBK863S Tri-Band WiFi 6 Mesh System Review

Performance

The performance has been tested in an older building with mostly thick walls. Some tests were performed in the same room, some in another room, so on the way, there was at least one thick wall. Additional signal range and maximum internet bandwidth tests were performed in another three-flat building.

For PC bandwidth tests have been used two computers with Intel AX standard WiFi cards. In both cases, AX WiFi was integrated into the motherboard. In use were antennas delivered by manufacturers, so nothing but a retail package.
The Internet bandwidth was also tested with an iPhone 13 Mini.

We have to remember that results may vary depending on used network cards, antennas, additional signals in the area, and other variables.

WiFi Signal

The signal quality was amazing, even though on the way were thick walls. In the same building, we had problems with NETGEAR RAX120. Even when satellites were disabled, then the RBR860 router was still providing a better signal than the RAX120. This is the first WiFi solution that handles this specific building and doesn’t cause signal drops. I won’t hide that before tests, I was a bit skeptical, but I’m fully satisfied seeing how it works. All connected devices can reach a maximum signal, and if not, then now I know it’s not Orbi’s fault. For example, one of the older laptops has a weak antenna built-in, and it never runs at full bandwidth. However, all newer devices, TV, cell phones, and everything else keeps a maximum signal.

The router can switch automatically between 2.4G and 5G networks to provide optimal performance. It works without issues and doesn’t cause any interruption while playing games or any other activities.

WiFi Bandwidth

Our results in data copy between computers in the local network are up to 20% better than on the RAX120 router, which was in the same network before.

All the network benchmarks show about 400-500Mbps average bandwidth. The TamoSoft Throughput test shows additional spikes up to 1200Mbps. This is the limit for WiFi controllers on motherboards.

CrystalDiskMark on the mapped network drive could reach 55MB/s, so the mentioned 20% better than our results on the older NETGEAR router. It confirms what NETGEAR says in the product features.

Depending on the test file size, LAN Speed Test shows between 350 and 500Mbps read and 250-350 Mbps write. This is also a respectable result.

Internet Bandwidth

Internet bandwidth has been tested using probably the most popular web test – www.speedtest.net. For this test, has been used 1000/300Mbps asymmetrical fiber channel connection.

The results show that the router handles our connection without issues and is prepared for much more. The bandwidth is similar on the iPhone 13 Mini (above) and on the PC (below). Depending on the test server, it even slightly passes the maximum rated bandwidth, but typically the average is up to about 950Mbps.

Stability

The router has been working for over a month in the same environment, with some computers running 24/7 and using the Internet connection. We haven’t noticed any disconnections or significant performance drops. Everything was perfect on all devices in the local network, which included about 11 different devices – computers, TV, gaming consoles, smartphones, and more.
The stability is on the highest level and should satisfy the most demanding users. There was no lag in online games caused by the router itself. The Orbi is perfect for daily work but also competitive gaming.
