Closer Look and Performance

The Interior of the PSU looks exceptional. The build quality is high, and everything is clean. Soldering is also pretty good, and the whole design suggests there were no problems with overheating of any component. The PSU can work up to 30%+ passively, so at least at about 300-350W. I assume that even higher wouldn’t be a problem, but the automatic fan speed adjustment is set to start to spin the fan at about 30% load.

All the visible capacitors are rated at 100°C or more. Many, if not all capacitors are Japanese, as we can read in the main features. The main capacitor is Nippon Chemi-Con. It’s rated at 450V, 680uF, and 105°C, so exactly as the specs say.

The latest FSP PSUs look great outside and inside. You can see how well looks the installed daughter PCB board. FSP is clearly making the right moves on gaming and enthusiast-grade products.

There are not many heatsinks, and their surface is enough to keep everything cool and quiet. The fan keeps the optimal temperature under load, even though it runs in a semi-passive mode.

The Hydro G Pro 1000W uses a fluid dynamic bearing MGA12012XF-025 fan, rated at 12V 0.52A. It’s made by Protechnic Electric and has 120x120x25mm. The automatic adjustment limits it to about 1400RPM and under 1000RPM at about 70% load. During the tests, the fan was quiet, and the generated noise suggests it was spinning even slower than in the general features and specifications.

 

Performance

Tests were performed on the AMD Ryzen platform, which contains the overclocked Ryzen 9 7950X CPU, ASUS Crosshair X670E Gene motherboard, overclocked Colorful RTX4080 Advanced OC graphics card, and additional components to bump the wattage some more. The peak wattage is around 800W.

All results were performed in the Corsair 5000D case with good airflow.

There were no stability issues during all tests. The efficiency of the Hydro G Pro 1000W is great. The +12V voltage was nearly perfect under load. It could be slightly better, but everything was great during tests, and it was still close to the reference values. The results seem just right for the 80 PLUS Gold certification.

In idle and during the mixed load tests, the PSU was silent. Under full load, we could hear the fan, but it was still quiet. For sure many competitive PSUs made us a worse impression. FSP PSUs from earlier years were not as quiet, so we are glad to see improvements.

The mixed load test will be the closest to the daily usage, which is about what we can expect during gaming or some more demanding tasks. During this work, the PSU is just perfect. It’s quiet and delivers stable voltages.

The PSU is designed to work with the latest graphics cards from Nvidia and AMD. However, the main difference makes the power connector used in new Nvidia graphics cards. The 12VHPWR cable used by FSP is designed to handle 600W and has 16 pins, so it’s just right for the RTX4090. In the tests, we used RTX4080, so also a power-hungry GPU.

The Hydro G Pro 1000W is clearly one of the most interesting new PSUs. As long as it’s available in your local stores at a reasonable price then it can be easily recommended. Amazon should have a wide offer of new FSP PSUs soon, so if you can find it right now, then it will be available soon.
