The MX500 4 TB SSD uses most components from Micron, and it’s not a surprise since Crucial is a Micron brand. The only exception is the Silicon Motion SM2259H controller. The controller, together with Micron DRAM and NAND, can be seen in the photos below.

The SSD. arrived in perfect condition and 0 GB written. To read the SMART report, we can use various diagnostic programs. Crucial is offering Storage Executive, which also updates the firmware and provides additional functionality.

Below is a screenshot from CrystalDiskMark. We can see that the idle temperature is around 26°C. Under load, it’s not high too.

The drive arrived with the latest firmware, so we don’t need to update it.

Package and its Contents

In the package, we are receiving the MX500 4 TB SSD, a multilingual quick-start guide, and a frame that helps with installation in older laptops designed for 9.5mm SSD/HDD. Additionally, we can receive data migration software from the Crucial website.

The package is typical for Crucial SSD. It’s a small, flat box and keeps a similar design as other Crucial storage devices. On the exterior, we will find a general specification, additional features, and contact with support.

The SSD’s design didn’t change for three years. It’s still silver, made of metal alloy. It also uses the same SATA connection and should be compatible with every laptop or desktop PC with SATA connectors (some new laptops support only M.2 storage).

The installation is straightforward, but if anyone needs help, then Crucial has an installation guide on the website, which also includes data transfer from the old drive.

Above, you can see how the MX500 4 TB SSD looks installed in the ASUS A15 laptop. Installation in this laptop takes less than five minutes.

For some users, the most important is the performance so let’s move to the next page to check our results in popular benchmarks.
