Crucial X8 1TB USB 3.2 External SSD Review

Specifications and Closer Look

Tech Specs:

  • Phenomenal read speeds up to 1,050MB/s
  • Compatible with a broad range of computers, tablets, smartphones, and gaming consoles
  • Stylish design with anodized aluminum unibody core
  • Drop-proof up to 7.5 feet, extreme temperature-proof, shock-proof, and vibration-proof
  • Backed by a three-year limited warranty

The specification of the X8 looks interesting. It works with any USB generation, but of course, the maximum speed can be achieved on the USB 3.2 controller and a proper USB Type-C cable. Because of that, the maximum declared read bandwidth is up to 1050MB/s while it’s not guaranteed on every available platform.

Above, you can see the drive’s health. All looks perfect so there shouldn’t be any problem to perform tests.

You can also see that the temperature is around 38°C during lower load, so not much. The X8 drive isn’t cold during full load but also isn’t hot. There was no thermal throttling during work, and we haven’t seen performance drops during more extended tests.

Crucial is adding its own Storage Executive software, which offers diagnostics, firmware updates, and many other features. However, I wasn’t able to make it work correctly with the X8. Maybe it’s just an early version or my test platform. Either way, I count it will work after the next firmware or software update.

In the package, we are receiving the X8 drive, multilingual quick-start guide, USB-C to USB-A adapter, and a USB-C cable.

As we can see, if we use the adapter, then declared maximum bandwidth can be 5Gbps while the USB-C cable offers up to 10Gbps. It’s important if we have a USB-C connector in our PC, and we wish to achieve the full speed of the drive.

The package is really small, but as you see, it includes everything we may need. The most important is, of course, the drive which looks fantastic. The enclosure is pretty durable and also looks waterproof, but we didn’t test that. For sure should protect our drive from multiple drops on the ground from standard 1-1.5m.

Inside the X8, we will find already well known Crucial P1 1TB M.2 PCIe SSD, which is using Micron QLC NAND. It helped to reduce the drive’s cost and, at the same time, offers high performance. The drive is also well-known to be stable during long work.

On the next page, we will take a closer look at the X8 drive’s performance.
