Patriot is not providing additional software, and it’s not really required. Windows is covering the driver part while firmware can handle everything else. Below is a screenshot from a popular CrystalDiskInfo in 8.0.2 version. As we can see, there are no issues with our drive. Health status is showing 100%, and the low load temperature is 42°C. I will only add that the temperature under high load was around 64°C. It’s below specified maximum and far from a throttling point.

Closer Look

Patriot Viper VP4100 arrived in a small box, of course, well-protected for the time of transport. It’s a retail package so you can count that if you decide to buy this SSD, then it will look exactly the same.

Exterior tells us about everything we need to know about the drive so, besides capacity, we can read about the key features, declared performance or find info about the support.

On the package is also drive’s expected bandwidth which in this case is 5000MB/s read, and 4400MB/s write. These are peak values which are possible in some situations so we can’t count that any drive will run at such a high speed all the time.

The drive is covered by a five-year warranty what is pretty long. If we count typical home and office usage, then the VP4100 should last much longer, but it’s great that the manufacturer trusts the quality of its product to offer as long as five years of warranty.

The drive looks great, even though that the M.2 2282 specification is quite restrictive. The used heatsink is a definite improvement compared to VPN100. It’s not so obvious till we try to install both drives on the back of the motherboard, in a laptop or on a motherboard like Gigabyte Aorus X570 I Pro WiFi where is limited space for the SSD. The VPN100 has problems in these situations while lower profile heatsink on the VP4100 fits perfectly.

Patriot used the latest Phison E12 controller and 1GB of fast cache what the heart of the VP4100 is. This is a quite right combination which should provide high performance at a reasonable price, the same as previous Patriot M.2 PCIe SSD. It’s also one of the reasons why these drives are popular.

The most important is, of course, the performance so let’s move to the next page to check our test results.
