Patriot Viper VP4100 1TB NVMe PCIe 4.0 x4 M.2 SSD Review

Performance

Performance has been tested on the latest AMD Ryzen platform, which is the requirement to run PCIe 4.0 x4 drives at their full speed. The platform contains the Ryzen 7 3700X processor and ASRock X570 Phantom Gaming ITX/TB3 motherboard.

All tests were performed on Windows 10 Pro x64 OS with the latest updates.

As usual, we will start with the ATTO Disk Benchmark in the latest version.

ATTO Disk Benchmark in the latest version is showing lower maximum bandwidth that the drive can make, but it’s somehow a standard for storage testing. Our results are up to 4.4GB/s read, and 4.0GB/s write. It’s already an improvement comparing to PCIe 3.0 x4 drives which couldn’t run at much above 3.4GB/s

CrystalDiskMark is one of the main storage benchmarks on our market. Most users compare results in this software, so we are too.

The results are as high as expected. We can pass 5000MB/s mark without issues. Also, random operations are really high for a single drive.

If we enable 0Fill test, then results in random operations are even better, and right now it’s probably the highest result in our redaction. The 4K Q1T1 read is passing 163MB/s while 4KiB Q8T8 over 2280MB/s. These are numbers impossible for a single drives not so long time ago.

In PCMark 8, results are also high but not so much higher than on the VPN100 SSD. It’s a definite improvement; however, I doubt that anyone would feel the difference in daily work. Results in PCMark 8 are usually better on Intel platform, but in this case, Intel has no chipset with the PCIe 4.0 support, so there is no alternative to the X570.

The Viper VP4100 is so far one of the fastest SSD available on the market. Anyone who is searching for top-performing SSD should be satisfied. On the other hand, those who already own fast PCIe 3.0 x4 drives probably won’t see a significant difference.
