ASRock Radeon RX 6700 XT Phantom Gaming D Graphics Card Review

Today we’ll be taking a quick look at the ASRock Radeon RX 6700 XT Phantom Gaming D 12G OC Graphics Card. The card is aimed at gamers and enthusiasts who game at 1440p resolution. It’s powered by AMD’s latest 7nm Navi-based GPU, featuring RDNA 2 architecture, and it comes with 12GB of GDDR6 ram on a 192-bit memory bus. It also offers a total of 2,560 stream processors, 40 ray accelerators, a game/boost clock of 2548/2622 Mhz, and memory speeds of up to 16 Gbps.

This is our first review of a Radeon graphics card, that features AMD’s latest RDNA 2 architecture, and it will be interesting to see if AMD can delivers in terms of features and performance. The previous generation of Radeon 5000-series graphic cards (RNDA 1st generation) did not support Ray-tracing, and this has been one of my many gripes about AMD graphic cards in the past couple of years. The RDNA 2 architecture promises a whole lot more, including Ray Accelerator and Ray-tracing via DXR and Vulkan RT, Infinity Cache, high clock rates and more.

Here’s the current situation and it’s not looking good … there’s been a global chip shortage throughout 2021, and this has been a major pain point for both manufacturers and users. This means prices have been soaring for GPUs, up to 3x MSRP (or more) … even for older generation cards. Some blame scalpers, while other blame crypto miners … what ever the case, it’s very unlikely you will be able to get hold of a next-gen graphics card at a decent price.

OK, now that you know what’s happening … let’s get back to the review of the ASRock Radeon RX 6700 XT Phantom Gaming D.

I would like to thank ASRock for providing the review sample. This is a snippet from what ASRock has to say about themselves on their website:

ASRock Inc. is established in 2002, specialized in the field of motherboards. ASRock strives to build up its own brand. With the 3C design concept, “Creativity, Consideration, Cost-effectiveness”, the company explores the limit of motherboards manufacturing while paying attention on the eco issue at the same time, developing products with the consideration of eco-friendly concept.

ASRock has been growing fast and become world third largest motherboard brand with headquarter in Taipei, Taiwan and branches in Europe and the USA. The young and vibrant company targets from mainstream to enthusiast MB segments for different kinds of users, owning reputation around the world market with its reliability and proficiency.

Here’s a quick comparison between AMD’s Radeon RX 5500 XT, RX 5600 XT, RX 6800 XT and ASRock’s Radeon RX 6700 XT 12G OC.

As you can see from the table above, the ASRock Radeon RX 6700 XT Phantom Gaming D 12GB OC comes with more compute cores and stream processors than the RX 5500 XT and RX 5600 XT, and increased memory speeds of 16Gbps. Clock speeds are higher with a boost clock of 2622 Mhz. It also now features Ray Accelerators which are lacking in the previous 5000-series.

One thing about this card that really stands out is the menacing looking, Phantom Gaming 3X Cooling System, featuring a reinforced metal frame and a stylish backplate. It also comes with a massive heatsink, 5 heatpipes, v-shaped air vents, and 3 fans with one featuring a unique ARGB fan in the middle of the card, that supports ASRock’s Polychrome Sync.

So what can we expect from the ASRock Radeon RX 6700 XT Phantom Gaming D in terms of performance? Well, we should being getting some decent scores during our benchmarks, especially with its overclocked GPU and faster memory speeds. As far as performance comparison goes, it should sit somewhere between a GeForce RTX 3060 and a RTX 3060 Ti.  Right, let’s continue and check out the specifications of the graphics card on our next page.
