ASRock Radeon RX 7900 XTX Phantom Gaming 24GB OC Graphics Card Review

Verdict and Conclusion

Well what can I say … other than the fact that right now in our labs, the ASRock Radeon RX 7900 XTX is one of the fastest graphics we’ve tested to date (not taking into account of course the GeForce RTX 4090, which we haven’t tested yet). It easily beats our trusted GeForce RTX 3090 in all of our tests. Although I don’t have a RTX 4090 to compare it with, the RTX 3090 is not a bad card at all, and it’s still very capable to run all DX12 games with RTX-On :D!

During our tests, we used our usual test rig which is comprised of an Intel Core i9-13900K processor, ASRock Z790 PG SONIC motherboard and 32GB of Viper Gaming Venom DDR5-6200 memory. I got excellent scores in all of our benchmarks, including an impressive high score of 24,039 for GPU Basemark, and a Geekbench GPU score of 174,815. For Unigine’s Valley benchmark, we got a score of of 11,456, and a Final Fantasy benchmark score of 21,506.

For Superposition 1080p extreme and optimized 4K, we got excellent scores of 17,540 and 23,244 respectively. For 3DMark Timespy and Firestrike, it produced an amazing score of 27,835 and 43,120 respectively. And finally, for Speedway and Port Royal, it produce an impressive score of 6,185 and 15,941 respectively. And lastly, we got a DirectX Raytracing score of 50.42 fps and a Passmark 10 GPU score of 27,933.

As you can see from the above scores, the results are pretty amazing. This is all thanks to the factory-overclocked GPU which operates on a Boost Clock speed of up to 2,615 MHz (the default is 2500 Mhz), while the Game Clock speed is now at 2,455 MHz (default is 2300 Mhz).

AMD have really upped their game over the past year, and I’m really glad they’re doing well. Especially when you have to take into account, that they’re competing against both Intel (CPU market) and Nvidia (GPU market). Late last year, they launched the Radeon RX 7900 XT and XTX, which competed really well against Nvidia’s GeForce RTX 4080 (the RTX 4090 is still top, but costs 50% more). And as we all know, at the beginning of this year, they launched their new range of Ryzen 7000 series of processors with 3D V-cache. These new processors received great reception from the general public, with the Ryzen 9 7950X3D earning the title of “The World’s Fastest Gaming Processor”.

The future is bright, the future is RED. I can see AMD doing really well going forward, both in CPU and GPU advancements. Just imagine if AMD used this new 3D V-cache technology on their GPUs! I’m sure it’s going to happen soon!

What I love about the card, is that you don’t need to upgrade your PC, or change your power supply to the new ATX 3.0 standard, and you definitely don’t need to use the new PCIE 5.0 (16-pin 12VHPWR) power connectors. Just replace your old graphics card with the new Radeon RX 7900 XTX, and plug in 3 x PCIE 8-pin power cables and your set to go!

Aesthetic-wise, the ASRock Radeon RX 7900 XTX looks slightly different to their last flagship card, the Radeon RX 6950 XT. They’ve removed the LED from the middle fan, which is a shame … because I really liked it. Instead the LED is now positioned across the card in a S-shape design. The card also has a 3-pin ARGB header so that you can connect to the motherboard that supports ASRock’s Polychrome Sync.

For cooling, the card uses the same Phantom Gaming 3X Cooling System featuring a massive heatsink with 7 heatpipes, reinforced frame, metal backplate, and 3 Striped Ring fans. Thanks to this new custom cooling solution, you don’t have to worry about any GPU hotspot issues. GPU load temperature reach a high of 60 degrees Celsius, while the GPU hotspot reach a maximum of 106 degrees Celsius, but averages just under 100 degrees Celsius. Remember, this card uses a factory-overclocked GPU, so considering the fact it isn’t too bad.

For those who dislike RGB, there’s a unique on/off switch on the top the card that controls the RGB LEDs. For monitor output, it comes 3 x DisplayPorts v2.1 and 1 x HDMI 2.1 port (VRR). For those to use high-end gaming monitors that support refresh rates above 144Hz, remember to use some high quality DisplayPorts v1.4 cables and enable FreeSync on the Adrenalin Software, otherwise you won’t be getting all the benefits of the graphics card or monitor.

Costing around USD $1400+, the ASRock’s flagship Radeon card doesn’t come cheap, but you are getting a Radeon RX 7900 XTX with a custom cooling solution, ARGB lighting, and a factory overcked GPU. You can buy the ASRock Radeon RX 7900 XTX Phantom Gaming graphics card for around USD $1,499 from Amazon – https://amzn.to/3SQgyup

Final Thoughts

There’s no question in my mind, the ASRock Radeon RX 7900 XTX Phantom Gaming graphics card is an excellent choice for enthusiast gamers who wants the latest graphics technologies, without having to upgrade their PC or replace their existing power supply. It offers amazing performance thanks to the factory overclocked GPU, and 24GB of GDDR6 ram running at 20Gbps.

And if you’re worried about the GPU hotspot … there’s no need. The impressive custom cooling solution from ASRock has taken care of it.

106º is pretty bad, my MBA model stays at 80º on the hotspot

We tested the card at 100% load … no throttling and no issues, plus it uses an overclocked GPU. It peaked at 106 but averages around 100, which i think is acceptable.

Winston i heard that several users I dont own this have tighten screw on backplate and got better hot spot temps cause the backplate werent properly seated i dont know if its true . I test a XT tuf hotspot is 79c . Thanks for a good reveiw buddy though.

Ok let me check… maybe I should tighten the backplate a little more 😆

How was it, did you manage to get any better temps with tightening the screws/other stuff. That 106 seems high, especially with the difference between GPU edge and junction temps being 46 Celsius. The reference models are considered faulty if the temp difference is over 40C (and junction reaches 110C). As I already had one such card, I am hesitant to be burned twice (pun intended) by a 7900 XTX 😀

Hi there, Winston you wrote that : ” the ASRock Phantom Gaming 3X cooling solution is doing a great job of cooling the graphics card. This is all thanks to the large heatsink with 6 heatpipes and triple ring fans.” And I had the impression that the ASRock Radeon RX 7900 XTX Phantom Gaming 24GB OC Graphics Card comes with 8 Ultra-fit heatpipes, according to the photos displayed on the ASRock website… At least I count 8 pipes on their photo. Can you tell me if I am wrong here…??

Actually I recounted … total is 7 heatpipes. I have amended the review accordingly. Thanks 🙏

Heya, for people with bad temps. It seems boost clock is a bit much for the card. I found this thread on reddit: https://www.reddit.com/r/radeon/comments/16g2p5u/asrock_gaming_phantom_7900_xtx_temps/ people suggest to UC (2300-2400 frequency, 1120mv, 2714 ram and +15 pwr), and then FAN speed drop by 500rpm, also power consumption from around 400W to 300W and loose FPS is like 1-3FPS. Can try this settings for you.
