HIS R7 240 iCooler Boost Clock 1GB GDDR5 Graphics Card Review

Performance in DirectX 11 Benchmarks

 Test Setup

HIS R7 240 iCooler 1GB graphics card has been tested on Intel platform based on i7 4930K processor and MSI X79A-GD45 Plus motherboard. Because of R7 240 general performance, six cores of our testing PC won’t help much in benchmark results so similar results should be also on most available new quad core processors running at about 4GHz.

Futuremark 3DMark11

Futuremark benchmarks are always showing lower frames per second that actual generation of games so hard to rely on these scores to pick graphics card for the games.

As we see, two year old benchmark is showing us results at about 6-13 FPS in Performance preset. It’s of course too low to play games.

3DM11 P

Extreme preset is showing us even lower results. 1.5-2.5 FPS is not what we wish to see while playing our favourite titles.

Futuremark 3DMark ( 2013 )

Latest version of 3DMark has better tests in my opinion so we can easier compare benchmark results to available games.

Basic tests of Ice Storm benchmark are designed for mobile devices and entry-level PCs. In this stage R7 240 is showing really good performance and this test is simply too easy.

3DM13 IS

Cloud Gate a test dedicated for notebooks and home PCs. R7 240 is passing Cloud Gate at 46 or higher FPS what is just right performance to run most new games at medium details.

3DM13 CG

Fire Strike test is dedicated for high performance gaming PCs. Results in this test are approximately 6.5 FPS so far from smooth. There is also Fire Strike Extreme test but I will leave it and assume that Cloud Gate is optimal test for R7 240.

Unigine Heaven

Unigine Heaven is very popular DirectX 11 benchmark. It’s also very demanding. Default benchmark at 1080p resolution gives us average FPS of 18.8. It’s not high enough FPS to be smooth in games. However it’s not a game and we can enjoy watching this benchmark at slightly lower details.

Performance in DirectX 11 Games

Tomb Raider,

1920 x 1080 , normal preset

Tomb Raider is really good looking game which brought us TressFX technology so more details what we can see mainly on the character’s hair.

R7 240 in normal preset and 1080p isn’t very fast but should be good enough to play at average of 28 FPS. Slightly lower details should help to enjoy this title.

TR normal

1920 x 1080 , ultra preset

Ultra preset is already too much for R7 240. Average of 14.4 FPS is simply too low to play.

Metro: Last Light

1920 x 1080, Low quality

Metro is one of more demanding games in the last years so I wasn’t expecting really good results. However HIS R7 240 is fast enough to enjoy this game at low quality. Low quality sounds bad but it still looks good. We can expect some FPS drops below 20 but not really often so we can play the game without bigger issues.

 Metro Low

1920 x 1080, high quality

High quality is totally different story. We won’t be able to play at this graphics quality because of too low FPS.

Metro High
