A Closer Look

So guys let us first take a look at the packaging of the synology DS214se. The NAS is packed in a simple brown cardboard box,

With on the sides some specs and features, other then that nothing more.

When we open the box, we see the NAS packed in a white protective sleeve, and on the side some cables and information.

So here we have a welcome guide in a little bag together with some screws to mount the hard drives. The thing I was a bit disappointed not see is the 2.5″ drives holder. A the power adapter, the power cable and an Ethernet cable, witch is really nice to see included.

But I guess you guys do not really care about the box, and want to see the DS214se itself so let’s not wait any more.

The DS214se is very similar to the DS214 in terms of looks except this one is white. But on the inside this model is a bit less powerful but also a bit less pricey. Around 100 euros cheaper then his bigger brother the DS214. Its main purpose is to offer a simple and cheap NAS systems for people who just want something to backup their data. Not saying you can not do anything more with it, but more about that further.

As you can see the “Synology” logo is a bit cut out. First of all I find it looks cool and secondly you have some more airflow in the system, what is always good.

Then on the front we see a some LEDs, 1 for the status, the LAN connection, disk 1 and disk 2. on the bottom there is also a power button with a LED when it is active. Pretty simple actually but it is enough.

Then on the back we see a 92mm cooling fan, 2 USB 2.0 ports, a Gigabit Ethernet port and the jack for the external power brick. There are also 2 little holes, one on the top and one on the bottom to secure the cover firmly. and at last there is room for a kensington lock.

After removing the cover, what is really easy. We can see the inside of the NAS, a hard drive rack, the cooling fan and that is it. The motherboard of the NAS is safely underneath. You just need to insert your drive and secure it with the include screws. If you want to install a 2.5 mm one you do need a hard drive holder, what is unfortunately not included with the NAS.
